    Hello Ladies

Hormones and weight gain are correlated in women. It is seen in many cases the increase in the body weight is often the result of hormonal imbalance. In many cases we see people gain weight in spite of a healthy lifestyle.

The human body needs hormones to coordinate physiological functions. Hormones have a powerful impact on human body's metabolism, blood sugar control, appetite etc. Hormones travel in the blood stream and direct the functioning of the brain, liver, kidneys, nervous, respiratory system, monitor the presence of fat in the body. Any imbalance in the hormonal levels might lead to weight gain in the body, infertility, diabetes, hypertension and osteoporosis.

Estrogen : Estrogen is produced in the ovaries in females, to bring about monthly ovulation. When the estrogen level falls down, the body tries to get the estrogen from the fat cells to meet the requirement. The calories are converted into fat, hence results in the weight gain.

Progesterone : is also produced in by the ovaries and any decline in the levels the body tends to retain water in its cells. The progesterone and weight gain go hand in hand but its role is often deceiving.

Testosterone : is produced half by the adrenal glands and half by the ovaries. The fall in the levels of testosterone results in the loss of the body's muscle mass, which slows down the metabolic rate, resulting in the body weight.

Androgen : is produced by the ovaries and the adrenal cortex in women, is responsible for the mid-section spread of the women. The increase in the levels is one of the initial menopause symptoms.

Insulin : Insulin resistance is often noticed in women approaching menopause. One of the major side effects of insulin is the body converts every calorie consumed into fat. The weight gain in the middle age in women is the direct result of increase in the insulin levels.

Cortisol : Cortisol maintains the blood pressure, fast metabolism of fat and carbohydrates to ensure energy availability to the body and stimulation of insulin release to maintain blood sugar. Under the physiological-stress conditions the secretion of cortisol increases, which results in the weight gain

In my next thread the symptoms of hormonal imbalance and the lifestyle changes to balance the situation will be discussed.

    Hi Mango,
Since hormonal imbalance leads to weight gain and subsequently resulting in many more side effects; is it a good idea to get the hormone level checked and get it rectified.
