    Hi,

My 20 month toddler suffers from eczema. I regularly apply cetaphil and aquaphor creams and use only cetaphil cleaner to bathe him. I always dress him up in soft, cotton clothes. And when he does have a severe flare up I apply corticosteriod cream. We tasted him for food allergies and discovered he has a mild allergy to nuts and eggs. Despite all the precautions his eczema keeps flaring up during spring. We tried to give him an oral anti-histamine but it does not help much. I have realized that allopathic treatment for eczema gives only temporary symptomatic relief. Has anybody had success with ayurveda or homeopathy or any other alternate forms of medicine? If so please let me know. I am planning a trip to Chennai in June. If you know of a good ayurveda or homeopathy doctor please share his/her contact details.

    Thanks,
    Kavya.

    hi kavya,

i just saw ur post. my baby had eczema when she was only 10 days old and for 9 months i was running from one doctor to another applying whatever each doctor was telling - paeditician to dermatologist to eczema specialist. what not
when i went back to india in mumbai i tried homeopathy and acupressure. because allopathy medicines suppreses the symptoms the eczema does not go away.
and corticosteroids are not good bec it harms the skin more as it did to my child.
except breast milk and rice she was allergic to everything.
i did homeopathy treatment for 6 months and the eczema is now controllable. in the start its very bad because it starts coming out but afterwards it really helps.
she is now 3 yrs old and except chocolate and aerated drinks she can eat everything.
only the items which are hot in nature like maybe beef, mango, drumsticks i have to limit but she can still eat it.
so i think u can really go for homeopathy. along with that i was also doing acupressure on her soles and hands. hope this helps u

My daughter is now 3 years old. She started having acute eczema when she was around 4 months old. She was allergic to legumes, cashews, coconuts and had severe rashes.

Homeopathy worked wonders for her. We started treatment when she was around 8 months old and she was 90% better by the time she was 13-14 months old. Her skin almost completely cleared up, she could have normal lactose-free milk and life became much easy all of a sudden.

Now she eats almost all food and legumes and tolerates peanut oil and food cooked with peanuts and can also have coconut oil. Cashews are still a problem and she throws up. But any reaction to these things lasts only about half an hour unlike before when a rash would last for months together.

Her doctor in Bombay who treated her is Dr. Ashwin Patel. His email id is
    ashvinpatelnavagam at yahoo dot com.

We owe a lot to him.

    Best,
    Sanmati

Please tell me one thing, how do you know at such a young age ,say 3-4 mnths that a child is allergic to peanuts, legumes etc when the child is only breast-fed?

My 3 1/2 mnth old son has eczema which he developed at around 2 mnths. His ped says it is due to clothes rubbing on his skin since he has it all over his body and head except the back(since he is always lying down, there is no chance of clothes rubbing his skin there) and his diaper area(since it is always moist).I wash his clothes separately in Dreft and apply moisturising creme Eucerin 5 - 6 times a day and also once during the night.I can see his skin is very dry otherwise. His doc say maybe I should reduce my milk intake too just to see if that will help.I tried that, nothing worked.!!bonkI am thinking of Homeo or Ayurveda. But that I will be able to do only when he is around 15 mnths(next summer) when we will be visiting India. In the meantime,I am just wondering what to do other than this.

    Hello Sunitha,

When my daughter was 4 months old and started solids, I gave her peas not knowing that she was allergic to them. Later, when we travelled to India she did not have peas for a couple of days and we realized that she might be allergic to peas. I also used besan to bathe her (instead of soap) thinking soap might be strong and causing the rashes and she went bright red with rashes within minutes of my putting besan on her. All such things are signs and there is no easy way to tell what they are allergic to or not.

Then, when she was bigger I tried some peanut butter on her tongue and she again broke into a rash in seconds. Any time you try some new food or item, be prepared to run to a nearest restroom and wash the child with soap and be prepared for them to throw up etc. When I tried eggs, I gave her a small piece of omellete (on an empty stomach, so if she threw up it was not all she had just eaten), but luckily she was fine and loved it.

For introducing new foods, you can apply a little bit of the food item to some part his body that does not have any rash and see if a rash appears before trying it on the child.

One thing you can try while waiting to take the kid to India for homeopathy treatment is to go to a Indian homeopath practicing in your city. We found a doctor in ATL whom we went to for a couple of months before going to India. Here they charge ridiculous prices for treatment, but it is worth it if the child feels better.

Also, try and fit a filter to your bath tap/shower. You get them at Home depot/Lowes, they filter out the Chlorine and other strong chemicals in the water making it softer on the child. Also, add some baking soda to the water to soften it and remove the Chlorine before giving him a bath.

Use lotions that do not have alcohol ( as this burns, especially when skin is broken due to rash), petroleum jelly is quite good really and try and eat foods that are cooling (like yogurt, Kokkam) especially if you are breast feeding. I have read that eczema can be due to the body becoming acidic and heaty foods should be reduced.

Delay giving your kid solid foods till he is about 6 months old and introduce carrots and such vegetables and avoid legumes till he is bigger and stronger. Peanuts are legumes and cashews are a fungus (not nuts). My daughter is not allergic to walnuts, pecans etc., but she cannot handle cashews even now.

Also, try and delay some of the vaccines (give only necessary ones) till he is about 1 1/2 - 2 years old and ready to go to school. His immune system is already compromised and vaccines just add extra stress for such small bodies.

Put a clean bed-sheet on the floor ( carpets are probably the root cause of all the problems here) and let him crawl etc. on that.

Don't worry out about him catching something in India. Dust is the biggest problem there and chemicals are the biggest problem here. Even if he falls sick there, the docs are amazing and you will be well taken care of.

Try and avoid those anti-histamines and steroidal creams. They only suppress the symptoms, not address the causes.

We were given free steroidal creams, Zyrtec and were even told to give her oral steroids. Each time, we changed doctors till we found someone who understood our point of view. When allopathy does not have a cure for the problem, then they should not force you to mask it. It will only manifest itself later. After the homeopathic treatment, even the ped here was amazed at how fast she was cured. Now, we have to tell people that she had this thing called eczema. That is a nice feeling.

Good luck with everything. This will pass soon and you will even start to forget how bad it can be...hang in there....

    Sanmati
