• Communicate:

Communication with your team members, and communicating to them about what the management wants or has strategized, is important. You are the conduit between them and the management and the guiding force here. Communication is not only about what is told, it is also about how and when it is told. Keep the field open for queries and concerns.

Discuss, brainstorm, take inputs, and listen on the project being done. You all might just come up with better ways to do the job in hand. Your Eureka moment might be just a discussion away.

  • Acknowledge Performance:

Give credit where it is due. This is an important part of the job, and not done too often. I am sure most of us have missed out being given due credit sometime or other in our work life. Remember you felt bad.  Try and spare them the heartburn.

Handling A Team Is An Exercise In Maintaining Relationships

Communication with the team and motivating them is the key to efficient and effective working. A manager needs to keep an open mind and be approachable yet assertive and a disciplinarian. It can be a win-win for everybody.

  • You must remember to talk to your senior if something about or within your team bothers you. It helps to seek guidance.
  • A manager should not forget to be assertive with the team. She needs to be a disciplinarian as well.
  • You can face discipline issues like team members coming in late, not meeting deadlines, taking too much time on the phone, a lack of understanding of the job in hand, issues in their interactions with others within and outside the team and many more.
  • Ensure that you let them know you mean business.
  • Work out a balanced work division between the team members.

A Female Manager

As a woman and a manager, you might sometimes face tougher times. You are perceived to be softer and often have to prove yourself to your team – men or women. You might be judged more harshly. Remember, you are a professional and an equal. So, go for it.

Women managers have a tighter rope to tread but, it is time people understand that women professionals are here to stay and treat them as equals.

Managers have a tight rope to tread, wherein they have to manage work and people. Hone your skills in work and people management. And, do not hesitate to change if that begets better results. Change after all is the biggest truth in life.
