What is a normal work day like for a post production supervisor?

Since I am a freelancer, I don’t need to report to any office at a particular time. That is the best part about freelancing. I start my day whenever I feel like, check my business emails, make a few phone calls, head to the studio for a couple of hours, if needed depending on the project I am working on.

On a busy day, I have to shuttle between the sound studio, post production house, home and the office of the clients I’m working for. Since I am a freelancer, I don’t really have to make my presence felt around the client. This is one aspect of my work I thoroughly enjoy.

How do you manage to bag projects and market yourself?

In our industry almost everything works by word of mouth. If you do your job well, people will automatically call you for their next project.

What words of advice would you give new freelance post production supervisors out there?

Just have fun in what you do, and make sure you organize your schedule, because it is very easy to procrastinate when you work from home, as there are a lot more distractions. Furthermore, if you are a new entry into the field, start as an assistant director or editor first. Learn the art of films. This will help you command your post production role better, should you choose to go for it. Network with people, be professional and respect deadlines. After a couple of years, the work will come to you. That’s when you know you have nothing to worry about.

Can you tell us in brief what post production involves?

After every movie is shot, there is a process that needs to be followed. This process after the movie is shot is the post production part. This is when editing, dialogue fixing, special effects, cuts, additions, soundtracks, etc are added to the final cut of the movie. It is an intense process. It is as important as shooting the movie. Without the final touch ups, that the post production process provides, every movie would be incomplete.
