work from home and publish your writing voice

Sagarika Chakraborty author of ‘A Calendar Too Crowded’, in conversation with Nishi Roy, shares her vision and inspiration behind writing her debut novel.  Read on to know how women, working from home, and publishing can happily co-exist with each other.

Nishi Roy ( NR): It is not too often that someone so young writes her first book dedicated entirely to the trials and tribulations of women. What prompted you to do so?

Sagarika Chakraborty (SC): Yes, I am young and it is very unusual for people my age to pick up something so serious (often tagged as dark), but then I have been brought up by two ladies (my mother and my grandmother) who have always led me to believe that it is we, the youth, who have the power to change the society we live in, and that pen is the mightiest weapon of all.

NR: How do you get the time to write and when do you?

SC: To me writing is the biggest stress buster. I always feel I lose out on expressing a lot of things through verbal communication. I am a workaholic, so time management has never been an issue for me and being an insomniac, the silence of the night just helps me de-clutter my mind as I research, frame my thoughts and paint pictures with my words. My biggest fear is picking up a newspaper one morning and finding that there isn’t an article to encircle to which I can dedicate the day for research.

NR: Any personal experiences that you have weaved into your stories?

SC: Loads! Each story in the book is attributed to someone I have met or known. That is one of the reasons why I have preferred to keep the stories nameless – which few readers have pointed out that as a drawback. I strongly stand by the nameless stories mainly because I know the face behind each one of them and thus I wanted to leave them out and instead spin tales with just voices which represent millions. I want those voices to transgress all boundaries of geography, religion, age and caste to become one voice— the voice of womanhood.

Speaking of personal experiences, the story filed under March, “When the Ganges Ran Dry”, is actually a depiction of my relationship with my grandmother who has been one of the most important guiding forces in my life. The story dedicated to Women’s Day, which is a critical take on empowered women, is actually based out of a long debate I had with my mom a few years ago. And yes, there’s a story on sisterhood too, which is attributed to the most wonderful sibling bond I share with my sister, my hero.

Your Fortune For Today
Thursday, October 23rd, 2014

OK, up and at ‘em! You might feel like you’re walking through sand today, but you really need to shake your booty and get the blood flowing. If you don’t get up and do something, you’ll be a slug all day. You need to clear your head and cast off that bloated feeling. Most importantly, you want to get a good start to the day so you can accomplish everything that awaits you.

Someone who lives far away, someone you haven’t heard from for a long time, could give you a surprise phone call today. You’ll be delighted and probably stay on the phone too long. You might need to run a few errands, but the weather could keep you indoors. Don’t worry about it. You’ll still have time to take care of other pressing matters. You should be feeling especially artistic right now. Be creative!

Memories and emotions welling up from the past might excite your creative impulses today. You may not quite be able to understand what all of this means, but the pictures should keep coming to you nonetheless. It might be a good idea to take some notes, even though you might not comprehend all you write. This may be more a process of releasing ancient traumas than creating great masterpieces, but even so, it’s worth pursuing.

You’ve got a lot on your mind right now and others might be interpreting your quiet behavior as your being aloof. Go right ahead and let them think whatever they want. You’ve got some real issues to think through, and decisions with important consequences to come up with. You’ll be able to smooth their ruffled feathers later. Right now, just focus on taking care of yourself.

The desire to acquire more knowledge is front and center today. A lecture or workshop might lead to plans for a vacation of some kind with friends or other members of a group you’re affiliated with. Family members might also show an interest. You could all review the possibilities together and jot ideas. The energy and enthusiasm of everyone around you is high, so make the most of their ideas.

Events today can be stressful. It is important not to be sucked into other people’s worries or fears. Approach life with courage and optimism. You can handle new jobs with ease. If you want to be different, you have to make a commitment to change. Stick to you guns.

This is a day when you may feel limited by circumstances and possibly a little uncertain as to what to do next. Just remain cheerful and do your best with what is expected. Accept what comes your way with good humor and trust that any confusion will soon clear up.

You might be a bit confused with the mood of the day which fosters quick action and a sporadic approach to things. More than likely, this approach isn’t exactly in line with your usual methodical protocol. Do what you can to merge with this energy in order to add a more spontaneous spark to your daily routine.

It’s very important to express positive emotions to others and fight off your own negative thinking. Let disappointments bounce off, and refuse to take ill-considered words to heart. When one door closes, another opens. Plan to get together with friends. Your consideration, warmth, and humour are highly valued.
