work from home and publish your writing voice

Sagarika Chakraborty author of ‘A Calendar Too Crowded’, in conversation with Nishi Roy, shares her vision and inspiration behind writing her debut novel.  Read on to know how women, working from home, and publishing can happily co-exist with each other.

Nishi Roy ( NR): It is not too often that someone so young writes her first book dedicated entirely to the trials and tribulations of women. What prompted you to do so?

Sagarika Chakraborty (SC): Yes, I am young and it is very unusual for people my age to pick up something so serious (often tagged as dark), but then I have been brought up by two ladies (my mother and my grandmother) who have always led me to believe that it is we, the youth, who have the power to change the society we live in, and that pen is the mightiest weapon of all.

NR: How do you get the time to write and when do you?

SC: To me writing is the biggest stress buster. I always feel I lose out on expressing a lot of things through verbal communication. I am a workaholic, so time management has never been an issue for me and being an insomniac, the silence of the night just helps me de-clutter my mind as I research, frame my thoughts and paint pictures with my words. My biggest fear is picking up a newspaper one morning and finding that there isn’t an article to encircle to which I can dedicate the day for research.

NR: Any personal experiences that you have weaved into your stories?

SC: Loads! Each story in the book is attributed to someone I have met or known. That is one of the reasons why I have preferred to keep the stories nameless – which few readers have pointed out that as a drawback. I strongly stand by the nameless stories mainly because I know the face behind each one of them and thus I wanted to leave them out and instead spin tales with just voices which represent millions. I want those voices to transgress all boundaries of geography, religion, age and caste to become one voice— the voice of womanhood.

Speaking of personal experiences, the story filed under March, “When the Ganges Ran Dry”, is actually a depiction of my relationship with my grandmother who has been one of the most important guiding forces in my life. The story dedicated to Women’s Day, which is a critical take on empowered women, is actually based out of a long debate I had with my mom a few years ago. And yes, there’s a story on sisterhood too, which is attributed to the most wonderful sibling bond I share with my sister, my hero.

Thought for the day!

“Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. And so we must straighten our backs and work for our freedom. A man can’t ride you unless your back is bent.”

Your Fortune For Today
Sunday, October 26th, 2014

Things should go extremely well for you today, so don’t shy away from anything. In fact, take this opportunity to shine as brightly as you can. Crank up your battery and project yourself into the world. You’ll find that your smile is contagious, so feel free to use it often. There’s a great deal of power behind your self-confidence, enabling you to tackle just about every job with energy.

Examine your emotions and trust your instincts. Unexpected forces may try to disrupt the flow of things. Keep in mind that you should have no problem keeping the situation under control as long as you stay solid and focused. The actions you take today will have long-lasting effects, so be conscious of how you use your energy. Incorporate the old as well as the new in your game plan.

Energetic people are your best friends today. Reach out and ask for any help you might need. This is no time to go it alone. With emotions running high, arguments are possible, but they are not likely to be serious. As much as possible, channel your energy into physical outlets.

This day calls for a lot of emotional strength from you since some very old deep-seated feeling may emerge. You may find it difficult to cope with them. Try to avoid any situation that can cause you to erupt since you may utter painful words that you will surely regret later.

You may be having a difficult time getting your opinions across to others. For some, your ideas may seem too self-centered. For others, you may come across as insensitive to the situation. Do your best to understand what others are telling you. Don’t be surprised if you don’t receive the loving strokes that you feel you deserve. This is a day for you to observe and learn.

Some fascinating new information, possibly spiritual or metaphysical, could come today from periodicals, TV, or the Internet. This could set you on a new course of study. Your insights and revelations could prove valuable in increasing your understanding of what you read. This evening, expect a surprising message from someone you haven’t heard from in a while. Enjoy!

You should be happier than usual with what you see in the mirror, because your inner beauty is more visible than usual. You could also feel especially sociable. Both old friends and new should find your company especially congenial. Romance blossoms, although there’s a slight tendency today to see partners through rose-colored glasses. Hang onto your common sense, but not too tightly. Days like this don’t come around that often!

Don’t be surprised if things don’t go exactly according to plan today. Unexpected events are likely to pop up and disturb the course of action. Realize that these disruptions have a place in your life and that they’re occurring for a reason. You might not understand exactly how or why, but that’s OK. You don’t need to know. Welcome these new energies into your life.

Explore deeply your innovative, irrational side today. Your emotions may run counter to this principle, but instead of letting this put a damper on your progress, use the energy to spur you to action. Take advantage of the new gadgets and technology available to you. Incredible resources lie at your fingertips. Don’t be afraid to harness their power to your advantage.
