work from home and publish your writing voice

Sagarika Chakraborty author of ‘A Calendar Too Crowded’, in conversation with Nishi Roy, shares her vision and inspiration behind writing her debut novel.  Read on to know how women, working from home, and publishing can happily co-exist with each other.

Nishi Roy ( NR): It is not too often that someone so young writes her first book dedicated entirely to the trials and tribulations of women. What prompted you to do so?

Sagarika Chakraborty (SC): Yes, I am young and it is very unusual for people my age to pick up something so serious (often tagged as dark), but then I have been brought up by two ladies (my mother and my grandmother) who have always led me to believe that it is we, the youth, who have the power to change the society we live in, and that pen is the mightiest weapon of all.

NR: How do you get the time to write and when do you?

SC: To me writing is the biggest stress buster. I always feel I lose out on expressing a lot of things through verbal communication. I am a workaholic, so time management has never been an issue for me and being an insomniac, the silence of the night just helps me de-clutter my mind as I research, frame my thoughts and paint pictures with my words. My biggest fear is picking up a newspaper one morning and finding that there isn’t an article to encircle to which I can dedicate the day for research.

NR: Any personal experiences that you have weaved into your stories?

SC: Loads! Each story in the book is attributed to someone I have met or known. That is one of the reasons why I have preferred to keep the stories nameless – which few readers have pointed out that as a drawback. I strongly stand by the nameless stories mainly because I know the face behind each one of them and thus I wanted to leave them out and instead spin tales with just voices which represent millions. I want those voices to transgress all boundaries of geography, religion, age and caste to become one voice— the voice of womanhood.

Speaking of personal experiences, the story filed under March, “When the Ganges Ran Dry”, is actually a depiction of my relationship with my grandmother who has been one of the most important guiding forces in my life. The story dedicated to Women’s Day, which is a critical take on empowered women, is actually based out of a long debate I had with my mom a few years ago. And yes, there’s a story on sisterhood too, which is attributed to the most wonderful sibling bond I share with my sister, my hero.

Your Fortune For Today
Wednesday, September 17th, 2014

Just for today, ignore your habit of always trying to find an explanation for everything. Something is changing inside you and in the way you react to situations. The desire to incorporate life’s more unpredictable aspects into your personality is the basis for these changes. A lot of your theories are only there to reassure you, but you probably know that. Why not try being honest with yourself?

Dreams and meditations could lead to insights about how best to handle your finances. Your intuition is very strong. Also, you could receive some surprising ideas from media sources. No matter how outrageous an idea seems, consider it well before making a decision. A written plan of action for anything you do would be helpful. You’ll want to keep track of all your ideas.

Energetic people are your best friends today. Reach out and ask for any help you might need. This is no time to go it alone. With emotions running high, arguments are possible, but they are not likely to be serious. As much as possible, channel your energy into physical outlets.

There could be some tough forces questioning your most cherished dreams. Be careful about confronting someone who wants to poke holes in your idealism. You could end up feeling like a punctured balloon that’s slowly deflating. Do whatever you can to avoid the aggression at work to bring you down. Don’t let others get to you.

A desire to do some redecorating, perhaps in anticipation of hosting a social event, might prove frustrating today. You probably have some definite ideas, but can’t find the materials you need to produce the results you want. Whatever you’re planning, it might be a good idea to phone around in advance and see what resources are available. It could save you some frustration.

Take off to the stars today and keep your mind and heart open to all the possibilities that can come when you have faith in yourself and the work you do. Mastery of a skill comes when you have the guts to always take it to the next level. Consider different areas of your life that require more of that confidence at this time. Implement this courageous attitude.

You’ve worked hard for your money, and today you should reap the benefits of your efforts. Earnings, investments, property values – all should be worth considerably more than they were a year ago. Love, sex, and romance should also be going well, although you might have a few difficulties coordinating your schedule with your partner’s. Bask in the glow of your success.

You may not want to openly admit something to someone today, even though you know it’s true. You’re more than likely working to hide behind a barrier that has formed between you and a close loved one or family member. If you insist on behaving this way, you may want to consider why you even bother staying in the relationship in the first place.

Unexpected developments might interfere with your home life or with plans to spend a quiet evening with your family. This could have you feeling a little down at first, but don’t let it get to you. Whatever you do today might open doors that will benefit both you and those close to you.
