work from home and publish your writing voice

Sagarika Chakraborty author of ‘A Calendar Too Crowded’, in conversation with Nishi Roy, shares her vision and inspiration behind writing her debut novel.  Read on to know how women, working from home, and publishing can happily co-exist with each other.

Nishi Roy ( NR): It is not too often that someone so young writes her first book dedicated entirely to the trials and tribulations of women. What prompted you to do so?

Sagarika Chakraborty (SC): Yes, I am young and it is very unusual for people my age to pick up something so serious (often tagged as dark), but then I have been brought up by two ladies (my mother and my grandmother) who have always led me to believe that it is we, the youth, who have the power to change the society we live in, and that pen is the mightiest weapon of all.

NR: How do you get the time to write and when do you?

SC: To me writing is the biggest stress buster. I always feel I lose out on expressing a lot of things through verbal communication. I am a workaholic, so time management has never been an issue for me and being an insomniac, the silence of the night just helps me de-clutter my mind as I research, frame my thoughts and paint pictures with my words. My biggest fear is picking up a newspaper one morning and finding that there isn’t an article to encircle to which I can dedicate the day for research.

NR: Any personal experiences that you have weaved into your stories?

SC: Loads! Each story in the book is attributed to someone I have met or known. That is one of the reasons why I have preferred to keep the stories nameless – which few readers have pointed out that as a drawback. I strongly stand by the nameless stories mainly because I know the face behind each one of them and thus I wanted to leave them out and instead spin tales with just voices which represent millions. I want those voices to transgress all boundaries of geography, religion, age and caste to become one voice— the voice of womanhood.

Speaking of personal experiences, the story filed under March, “When the Ganges Ran Dry”, is actually a depiction of my relationship with my grandmother who has been one of the most important guiding forces in my life. The story dedicated to Women’s Day, which is a critical take on empowered women, is actually based out of a long debate I had with my mom a few years ago. And yes, there’s a story on sisterhood too, which is attributed to the most wonderful sibling bond I share with my sister, my hero.

Thought for the day!

“There is a great difference between worry and concern. A worried person sees a problem, and a concerned person solves a problem.”

Your Fortune For Today
Wednesday, August 20th, 2014

This is a lucky day to improve your home or do research to find a better place to live. Confidence supports success. Make sure to not get so caught up in your money- making tasks that you forget to relax and pay attention to loved ones. You need to remember that it’s the simple pleasures that are the most rewarding.

Your charm can be used to advance any interest early today. The more you can find creative ways to help others, the better your chances of getting what you want as well. Communication is likely to be flying in all directions. Make as many contacts as possible for the best results.

It is important to create a balance in your life. Learn to relax in order to live up to your full potential. This will give you an aura of self-assurance. This puts you in a good position at work or helps you find a better job. Enjoy a good meal.

You may feel particularly in the mood to play pranks today as the inner clown in you takes hold. However, make sure that your practical jokes are in good taste or you may end up in someone’s bad books.

Take off to the stars today and keep your mind and heart open to all the possibilities that can come when you have faith in yourself and the work you do. Mastery of a skill comes when you have the guts to always take it to the next level. Consider different areas of your life that require more of that confidence at this time. Implement this courageous attitude.

The cosmic energy encourages you to unleash your inner rebel. You can now show your true colors to the world. There is nothing wrong with being original. Singles can flirt shamelessly with the object of their fantasies. A wonderful playfulness in the air encourages having fun with children or pets.

Today you’re likely to be more focused than usual on whatever it is you have to do, whether it is chores around the house and yard or important projects of your own. Your mind is especially sharp and in tune with your feelings. Dreams and imaginings might prove to be valuable sources of inspiration. At some point, your mind might turn to travel, the acquisition of new knowledge, or both. Enjoy your day.

This is likely to be a busy time. Do as much as possible early in the day. Your gentle charm makes you a great favorite with family and friends. Stick with difficult or precise tasks. To feel your best, be sure your diet limits sugar and includes greens.

You should try to feel at ease today. Remember that inner peace is a big part of your health. This can be achieved through reflection and a quiet review of where you are in life. Try not to focus too much on material things. Instead, concentrate more on your emotional state. Others are likely to feel more sensitive and weepy as well, so have them join you in this exercise.
