With books and the Internet, help your child discover details about significance of the ceremonies performed and preparations consumed during the festival. The new knowledge will get them excited to wake up for the oil bath at the crack of dawn as they better understand its significance.

Distributing Sweets

Task them with the duty of distributing sweets to your neighbors dressed in the traditional finery. Visiting friends and family who have different traditions in comparison to those followed in your household will enrich their knowledge.

Prayers

Curious and bubbling with questions, children always want to know: why should we all do this? Rehearse easy hymns or shlokas with them and explain the meaning of the words so they can join the elders during prayers. Develop their understanding to be thankful for their fortune of having a loving family, being kind to others and helping the less fortunate. Assign them to a task to make them feel more involved.

Arrange for Games

Many festival parties can be boring for kids. Plan games where children can compete with each other, like decorating a Christmas tree, diya with pistachio shells or creating a rangoli with flower petals and announce a gift for the winner. It will help them showcase their talent. But mainly if they love doing these activities, you can involve them more actively in decorating. That is one less item on your task list.

Enjoy the festivities with your family and kids. Happy celebrations!
