Malaria is preventable with adequate precautions

1. Wear covered clothes, such as long pants and full sleeves. Light-colored, loose fitting dresses are preferable in evenings or nights when the activity of mosquitoes is at its peak.

2. Use a mosquito net or a repellant without fail in malaria prone areas.

3. Stay indoors, especially after dusk in high-risk areas. Keep mosquitoes away with closed doors and net-screened windows.

4. Anti-malarial tables are available to prevent infection. However, these drugs do not assure complete protection against malaria infection.

5. Keep away from surroundings that have stagnant water. At home, make all effort to keep moist areas, such as kitchen and bathroom clean and dry with proper ventilation.

Diet during Malaria

A light diet consisting of fruit juice, fruits and milk, is gradually introduced for the patient. During the recovery period, a well-balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts are prescribed for a healthy recovery. A patient must adhere to the instructions of the doctor with respect to dietary restrictions and drugs. Caffeine, alcohol, refined and processed foods, meat and spicy foods must be avoided for a speedy recovery.
