I always say IT companies are like sweatshops. They hire and fire people. If you had watched this Charlie Chaplin movie Modern times, it is very much related to what we are today. India has a long way to go regarding the labor laws.
CW, I happen to be working in one of the IT majors and I completely agree. I happen to see a declaration in our campus where the organization has stated that as per the labor law the employees are required to work only for 8 hours a day. But if our swipe data does not show a minimum of 9.5 hours we get mails from HR stating that we have not met the req. attendance. :rant
In one of the threads, I explicitly mentioned we are jackasses for the MNCs this is the reason I said so. Several companies, don't offer sick leave. They don't offer any benefit or leave encashment. There are good companies too. Sometimes, I feel there's no difference between us and the construction work laborers. Each passing day I see a stark decline in professionalism at work places. In the name of Americansim we have subjected ourselves to slavery to the employers. I for once will not accept anything that's thrown at me without any valid reasons. I find it difficult by the day to find an employer that is ethical, professional and which is more focused towards building an organization. I think the prevailing culture is short-term benefits and exit from the market.
The European countries are far superior in this. They treat employees very well and the government laws are such that salary, age and qualification must match. Employees can sue their companies if they are not granted adequate leave, or not treated properly or not heard properly. They take every single aspect of work seriously.
That too only because the govt mandates it. Else these companies would have done away with that too. I envy my peers in Canada. They get 12 months paid maternity leave :spin -Lakshmi
Canada has more of a British system. European countries as such are welfare states. In India, we still have the pre-independence mentality. We don't hesitate to suck the west and back stab our own, this you will never find in the west.
Oh yes. I am so reminded of Kamal's Anti-MNC dialogues from Anbe Shivam. Esp. the one where he refers to ppl from MNC's as dogs that pick up the bones thrown by the foreigners.
Western world has become a western world because they made efforts to change their way, India is still developing country and we have a long way to go, we have to do our part to make a difference, I appreciate your effort to get the word out about bad companies in Chennai, that might me a small thing but in a long run it will make a difference because companies will some day feel the heat and start changing their policies.
LOL this does not help, Kerala is a good example of why that state failed to develop any industries. We should get away from communist thinking and think ways to make things better in a capitalistic and democratic way.
