It is not advised to wear salwars for work in US. It is always better to dress up in formals in US. I am working in US,so all the people here dress up in there formals. U can wear jeans only on fridays (that to if your client is ok with it). So I suject you to buy formal pants and some shirts or sweaters to match on those. And a formal shoes should be fine with it.

Dress code also varies based on geographic location. East coast is rumored to be more formal compared to west coast. To be on the safe side I would suggest getting a couple of formal trousers and some shirts that are relatively sober.

Thermal wear or thermals, as it is popularly known, are woolen undergarments which retain your body heat and keep you warm. As it is cold during bangalore winters we get them in any shops which sell sweaters. Not sure where you can get them in Chennai. I would suggest, take some more pants, maybe 2 more. This is just in case. If you were not able to do your laundry, you will have spare pants.

Regarding the taxi fare, most taxis are metered. So no need to worry about the fare. Tip depends on how much you want to give. You can prefer not to add any tip at all. Sometimes you can ask the taxi driver to add the tip to your taxi fare, that you will get reimbursed in case your company reimburses on actuals.

Can we take a sealed pack of oil and dal while travelling ?

Offcourse you have take them. Try to have them in visible containers and label them ..,You can take all the stuff's like idli podi, puli, vatha kulampu, voorukai, chatni..

I was under impression that no food items are allowed into US... Especially Pickles.... Contaminated with bacteria!!!

You can take sealed packets and tinned food. In Andhra, there are some stores which do the airtight packing. I have seen people taking homemade pickles, savouries(murukku,papad), rice, dal items which are packed this way. If someone asks you during the check, all you have to do is assure them that this is airtight & leakproof packing.

Regarding cooking oil, i am not sure whether they will allow you to carry. But i am sure they will not allow it in the cabin luggage. If you check it in, the packet might burst due to the pressure. I would suggest you to buy the cooking oil there from indian stores. If you want to take the oil from here, go for the 3 ltr plastic cans instead of packets.
