    Hello friends,

I want to get a job after 6 years of break. Actually I have worked till 2009 for 5 years on as400 ( old technology )and after that full time executive mba for 1.5 years. 2009-2011
I haven't worked after that because of family pressure to have a baby first( had some problems in concieving and got treatment).I also wanted baby as my age was increasing. By god's grace I have 1.5 years of baby and whole day is spent just like a minute .
But now everyone is lIke I am useless lady. My parents compare me with other classmates like how they are managing children and work. They are earning so much and I left my job and sitting idle. My inlaws taunt and compare with other dils who are less educated than me and earning very less. Worst part is my husband doesn't help me with any work at home and compare me with his lady colleagues as if I have never worked before and I don't know office environment. My husband literally says that my education is total waste as I am good for nothing.

I know even if I join work again people will continue to find faults in me. But I really want to get my financial independence and my lost confidence back. But getting job after big gap seems very difficult. I don't remember much of as400 now. Joining as mba fresher is also difficult because of age.
Now what to do...if I do any certification, will it help me?

Has anybody here joined work after a big career break. Need suggestions !!

    Hi Rupa,

Don't worry. You will get a job soon. As you know it if bit difficult to get back to the Job in IT field after such a long Gap. But you can join in Schools/Colleges as part time or full time teacher. you can get that easily.Otherwise try some freelancing job on net, it will be easy and you can work on your own timings. Once you have hands on expe in that particular tech then u can try for full time job. If you are very particular about IT, then need to do certification in some advance technology and ready to join as fresher only with low package what you got before.
    ALL THE BEST.

I think you have to ignore what they tell you about comparing yourself with your classmates. That is none of their business (sorry if that sounds harsh!)

How old are you? What kind of job would you like to do if you didn't have to make money?

Have confidence in you. I went back to work after 10 years gap. Initially it was a struggle but I managed. Look for what interests you. Either with your MBA or with your IT industry knowledge. Learn new technology if you want to go into IT. first decide on which field you want to step in and start preparing for that. It might take upto an year for your initial preparation and start looking for some freelancing opportunities as a way of getting some experience. Make use of the huge online resources and good luck

Is it possible for you to brush up your AS400 skills. ? I don't think it is difficult. You can brush up and start applying for programming jobs. Once you get the job it is just a question of a week or so. You can do a good job.
Or you can try for a similar role that you were doing after your MBA. If your intention is to get a job, you should not hesitate to take a management trainee job again. It is a question of time. You can do better than others and progress forward.
Why don't you start applying. Why do you think about age. ? You can apply with your 1.5 yrs of exp in your resume. You can get it.
And as another Ilite suggested, you can try for non IT job also. IT is not the only field where you have job prospects. So keep your options open, if your intention is to be financially independent.

VanithaSudhir, my resume is not getting shortlisted for management trainee position, they are saying they want only freshers .and by freshers they mean really freshers 2014 or 2013 passouts. That's why I am saying age is issue for MT roles
I have been applying for as400 roles also, it hasn't been shortlisted yet because of gap in experience.
See I am putting my efforts, so I want suggestions from experienced or those who have seen people similar to my situation. Hope you understand.
