There are many players in the market like sharekhan, karvy, ICICI direct.. you can register with any one of them. if you are worried about the charges do compare and then register.. I have ICICI direct hassle free as I also have an ICICI bank account.. You can just walk in any of the branch and ask for opening an account.. I dont know if this might be useful I am also writing for investors who are beginners . you may read the link below.. hope it will be helpful.

Yes other than ICICIdirect, Karvy, Sharekhan, Kotak, I've heard that SBI and HDFC are also into the fray. You may need to check it up.

I personally wanted to know, the procedures involved in gifting a minor(without PAN card) a few shares. Are shares still available to be bought from brokers in paper form...

Well these days, you need to have a PAN card to do on line trading. The market is quite down and you can get good shares at almost throwaway prices.

Regards Shama

Shares can still be bought in paper form if you are not having an online account.
before any of you do start an account... do check out the Indiainfoline company.
moreover the brokerage can be haggled forBig Laugh.. you ask them to reduce their charges.check the small details like...
monthly payment, yearly payment or idf they 'll accept onetime payment , then offcourse the brokerage, how low they can provide. most imporatant is the sped , as in live online trade , big mistakes canhappen i.e.
for eg. the rate of a share has gone down but on your connection it shows the older higher rate , you might buy at a higher price.
these problems do happen..so just be careful.

Has anyone tried online trading through SBI. I have an ICICI direct account which attimes just does not work when the volume is too high - this happens either when the market is crashing or is forging ahead. Inability to access at such times causes a lot of inconvenience. How good is india info line under such circumstances. Do you encounter unavailability during market hours. My trust in private banks is also at the lowest after the American misadventure. So thought it was better to stand with the public sector giants...

Dear Subadra
On rediff , yahoo, ndtv and some other sites, you have a finance section or stocks section, or might be markets. go , search there and read all you can, this is a line where you learn with time and reading. you have to take decisions which you might think are safe but might not be. there are times when the risk will be covered , be at times you need patience.
one advice do not get greedy , try to create wealth rather than money.
try watching the cnbc, tv 18, there are many such channels on tv. time will be your biggest teacher, but you will /should invest in small amounts in the start, only a few % of your total. try this and you'll learn on the way. ther are no lessons in it , none better than your own experience.
best of luck.
