| | Sindhis -Chailo Festival Chailo is an important festival of the Sindhi Community. The Sindhis observe 40 days fast in the months of July – August and offer prayers to Lord Jhulelal. After the fast is over they celebrate the occasion as Thanks Giving day with lots of enthusiasm and festivities. Sindhis observe Chailo Sahib with lots of devotion and faith in order to thank God for rescuing them from the hands of the tyrant. Sindhis greet each other with "Jhulelal Bera-Hee-Paar" which means with the blessings of Lord Jhulelal they will overcome all challenges and hardships. During Chailo, devotees have to follow certain rules during these forty days. These include certain restrictions on food. Do you know what they are? |

Chailo festival is an important festival for Sindhis. Every year we celebrate it with great enthusiasm. As a working woman, I am not able to keep the full 40 day fast, so I keep it for 21 days.

| | Re: Sindhis -Chailo Festival I liked your write up on the Chailo Sahib festival. Devout Sindhis follow certain restrictions like sleeping on the floor, staying away from consumption of white items such as rice, curd, milk and fried eatables, avoiding non-vegetarian food, no shaving or cutting hair, no use of soap or oil, no leather belts or shoes, wearing only simple clothes. They also lead a Brahmacharya way of life during this period. At the beginning of the fast the pujari ties a sacred thread on the wrist. People offer Akho i.e. rice and sugar everyday during morning prayers. In the evening, devotees attend kirtan in the temples. Now a days, instead of the full 40 days, devotees also keep fast for the first 10 days, or 21 days. At the conclusion of the fast, i.e. the forty-first day, Bahirana Sahib is worshiped and a procession is taken out. |
