festival - Champakkulam Boat Race

The Champakkulam Boat Race dates back to historic times and is considered to be one of the oldest of such races. Magnificent snakeboats present a charming sight as the rhythmic chanting of the oarsmen make matters vibrant.

This boat race starts the season of boat races in Kerala. The highlight of this race is a traditional procession on water. This boat race demonstrates the heritage of Kerala.

The Champakkulam Boat Race has a story behind it. The king of Chempakasseri, in Devanarayana, had built a temple in his kingdom. Just before installing the idol, the king was informed that the idol would bring misfortune.
