Re: Muharram Fasting during the month of Muharram is regarded highly, especially on the tenth day called “Ashura”. Muharram is observed with great fervor in Lucknow, particularly because it is the home of Shia culture and religious activities. A large number of taziyas and alams are taken out throughout the city. In places other than Lucknow, the taziyas are finally buried in the local burial ground. Mourners carry the taziya and beat their chests, grieving and lamenting the murder of Karbala. They cry “Hussain! Hussain!” in collective sorrow in the rhythm of the drum beats. Dancers and wrestlers enact scenes depicting the battle at Karbala. |
