How much and what type of sewing do you plan to do? That will affect your choice.

I would rather prefer a table top operated by legs rather than a hand held as it is very convinient to sew. But then if you plan to stitch only for minor things then hand held is also a good choice.

Thanks
Shyl

If you are planning to stitch dresses etc then hand held ones are not good. my friend got it and said the stitches come off easily and not very good.
you can get a basic model for low price during sale time ( the regular machine) or you can check out used machines which are also good. some of the older machines are really good work horses than the newer cheap plastic ones.

Ours is Euro Pro. We bought this couple years back through amazon. My DH alters my pants, his pants etc with this one. My cousin repaired her jeans with my machine. Overall its a good buy.

There are other good models like singer, brother etc. Read their reviews in amazon and other consumer reports websites before you make your purchase.

You can try Singer. I and my mom both have Singer. If you are using it for stitching dresses and embroidery it might be better to go for a leg machine. Also you can look for zigzag along with embroidery stitches in your machine. Nowadays basic Singer has normal stitching with zigzag . It might be good to get leg one becoz your hands will start aching if stitching dresses or major things. My mom has Singer from 8 yrs and before that had Singer hand model. Now I have Singer here from 7 yrs.We both havent had any problems with the machine and Singer lasts forever.Good Luck.
