Default Posting Gifts to India

Hi,

I have been thinking of sending gifts to my nieces in Chennai. I checked out at the Post Office and got the details. But my question is, will customs duty or any kind of duty be charged to my sister when she recieves the parcel? Has anyone sent gifts by post (from US) before? Any help would would be highly appreciated.
