Hi Cindhuja,
I guess Malar has given most answers, so I will just list the experience from my side -
HOTELS - the best resorts are Orange County and Club Mahindra Kodagu Valley, I stayed at Club Mahindra and the resort is awesome, we could just while away 4-5 days in the resort with nothing else to do. The resort is in the middle of a coffee estate and it is lovely trekking through the valley, we even walked it upto Madikeri town (which is the headquarters of Coorg and about 7 kms from our resort), But CM can be expensive if you are not a member and so is Orange County. Misty Woods & Coorg International are nominal priced hotels there but I do not know the quality of service and rooms. We once had lunch at Coorg International and that was very tasty but I hardly saw any crowd there. Restaurants in Madikeri town serve very good food at nominal prices.
FOOD - You get all kinds of food there from veg to non veg and from chinese to north indian but in Madikeri town, predominant restaurants serve Kerala / Coorgian cuisine. Ohhh the akki rotis (traditiional coorgian rotis) are so yummyyy!!!!!! If you are in CM or OC resort, the restaurants serve the best food in town so you don't need to bother outside.
CLIMATE - cold in December January but as long as you have winter wear, it is bearable. Remember there are rains in Coorg throughout the year, so just remember to take the umbrellas and raincoats for your family.
KIDS - would love the place, CM and OC resorts are very kid friendly with lots of gardens and play areas for kids
FROM CHENNAI - This is the way I travelled, I took Mysore Express from Chennai (overnight train), reached Mysore morning 8am. Checked into Ginger Hotel. 2 days sightseeing in Mysore. 3rd day - took a cab to Coorg (120 kms / 3 hours journey/ 1800 rs). The road is pretty good except the stretch from Kushalnagar to Madikeri which is bad due to rains (this was in October 1st week 2009). There are deluxe buses (called Airavat) run by KSRTC and there are many leaving from Mysore for Coorg, so travelling would not be a problem. We spent 10 days in Coorg at CM resort and then took a cab to Mangalore (160 kms/ 5 hours journey / 2500 rs) where we spent about 5 days visiting temples, then took the train from Mangalore to Chennai - total 17 days trip. Actually we overdid our stay in Coorg since we were in a relaxation mode but it does not need more than 3 days to visit all the interesting places nearby.
TRAINS - the nearest train station is Mysore (I am not sure of anything else). The trains between Chennai - Mysore are Mysore Express and Shatabdi. ME is better because it is a night train and you do not waste the day travelling. The other route to go to Coorg is from Kerala (Talassery Junction) but the roads are very bad.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Preethi
