Default Rail sneham

dear all,

I am sure each one of us will definitely have the nostalgias of train travel. The most preferred mode of transport. Now a days due to time constraints and convenience many prefer flight or car travel. But nothing can compete with the train.
For people traveling to office ,train is also a member of their family. A long caterpillar carrying sweet memories of many.Even i have very sweet memories of train travel.

We(I and my db) used to wait for the summer vacation to come just to travel in train. That too if it is more than 10 hrs travel, we would be flying in skies.Once the tickets are booked, a fight would start between us for the window seat and then for pushing the train.MY brother was very clever and he would pretend to push the train after the first bell and would see me with victory smile as if he only moved the train. We would even fight for correctly predicting the next station.Sitting near the window watching the pleasant village views and showing ta tas to the village children with much perumidham were sweet memories.During nights watching mini mini poochi near dark trees was my most favourite.
Sharp 9 ‘o’ clock my father would tell us to sleep and Again a fight would begin for the upper berth.I don’t know why i was so adamant for the upper berth. Finally I would only get the upper berth(now victory smile on my face) and the sad part of it was that just after 5 mins i would fall down and my mom would make my brother to sleep there and I would sleep on the lower berth.Next day morning my brother would giggle at me.Even today, if we talk about train travel, my brother makes fun of me.

Whenever I travel by train alone or with my family, I easily make friends with other passengers and would make the place more colourful by our hot chats and games eating all crispy vadais and bondas. The only thing i don't like is toilet maintenance and watery coffee.

Now a days I miss my train travel a lot.Due to dh’s work nature, We travel either by car(which I hate the most) or flight if it is long distance.I sometimes feel, my dd is missing all these nice things in life.So when ever I go to Chennai I take my dd in electric train from beach to tambaram at least once.

Working people traveling by train enjoy a great time in trains.Though it is crowded during peak hours, I have seen relaxed faces of women. This satisfaction , we can never get in bus travel.

Dear friends share all your sweet memories here.

hi Krithika,

wonderful topic....we got this topic in schools too, to write a paragraph...

You reminded us of the summer vacations lovely days...we used to spend two nights and two days in trains......but it was really fun and it will be more fun if our friends are also travelling by the same train.
When we were kids we use to travel by sleeper class and we had to change train also....as there were not many direct trains in those days. Summer was horrible in the train...but we enjoyed much when we used to get first class compartment....majaa do anything play, fight as one compartment will have only four seater so that will be for our family.... most exciting journey...most waited...my sister will say to my father-papa how you will have breakfast u cant bath, no puja in train...my father is really strict he will do his bath and puja twice whether it is summer or winter....and we used to enjoy so many goodies to eat and father will get us so many speciality of that state which we used to cross .... we always used to wait for gwalior for its milk cake and orai for its gulabjamun and kachoris all made fresh yum yum..... wonderful days...we can think only now..
But three years back i was in chennai i preferred to go by train and that will be again good short journey ...i used to watch someone having breakfast, combing hairs , adjusting sarees or some gossip...

dear padma,

2 days and 2 nights with friends?
I think it should be part of ncc camp.am i right?.I never had that chance of travelling with friends.

Travelling in trains in summer is really tough,But I never felt that way when i was young. That's why now a days, sleeper class tickets are more available than the ac class. But i feel, travelling in sc is more fun than Ac compartment. We cannot enjoy much in ac compt as the windows are closed.

Thanks for posting here.

hi kamala,
what a wonderful topic....am a great train lover myself....as with u, its my first preference over car or flight....

i too love to sit by the windows, and watch the villages in the distance go by....
oooh....you kindled a lot of memories....

i love train journeys to mumbai and delhi...as these would take two nights...
i remeber once my mom, grandmom and i went to mumbai to spend hols with cousins...my grand mom had brought lost of home made snacks ,chips, etc...i used to take a good portion and climb to the upper berth and settle down with books, news papers etc... :)

one of my favourite trips was during my CA Articleship - went to a client in mangalore from chennai...with two other frnds...the route was such a beautiful one...i am a kerala lover, and i enjoyed it thoroughly....the train goes along the west coast, crossing the northern part of kerala like kannur before reaching mangalore...its such a beautiful sight...the coast on one side, and small kerala houses and lily ponds on the other...
there is a place called Pallikere beach on the way...this is the place where the famous song "uyire .." in the movie "bombay" was shot... you can actually see the old fort (where manisha comes running ) as the train moves along the coast.....
oh ...those days....would love to go on that route again...

thanks for bringing bac my memories dear..... :)

Dear sow,

LOng journeys in trains are always wonderful exp.My native is calicut. So every summer we go to my grandma's house. So even we would go by mangalore mail.It was very good exp watching the village.
It would have been a sweet exp for you ,travelling with your friends during your articleship.I never had outstation audits. We had Tamilnadu tourism audits, but my parents never allowed me for outstation audits.I missed those beautiful exps.

I too love the song,"indha veenaikku theriyadhu" in sahana raagam.Even yesterday i was searching for the music and lyrics of the same.

THanks for sharing your views here.

Yes Krithika

Nothing can beat a comfortable train journey.
When I was very young, it was all steam engines! By the time we reached our destination our skin and dresses would have turned black. While seeing thro' the window we have to be careful that no particles of coal or ash go into our eyes! Still we enjoyed a family trip every year to our native place in Kerala during vacations. It is funny to think how some relatives or friends will see us in the intermediate station with a 'kooja' full of hot coffee and tiffin

When I travelled by electric train daily to my office for more than 25 yrs I never got bored a single day about the journey. I used to read magazines and enjoy the crowd and do lot of petty purchases. But now-a-days people are aloof, start SMSing or talking in their mobiles, no interaction between co passengers! Or rather I've become old to pick a conversation!

Still I love a train journey whether alone or with relatives or friends, If Iam alone, a Sujatha novel will be my best companion!
