Kiruth:

If your son says he is afraid to go to school then definitely something has happened which upset him. I would say try talking to him very casually and I know that might not work since he may not be able to tell exactly being only 4yrs old. Talk to the teacher also and then you might ask for permission if you can go and sit in the classroom for some time each day for few days. That may comfort him. You can tell him that the teacher called you to help her in the class or something that convinces him. Do not tell you are going with him to find out what is upsetting him. Sometimes these are small issues like being pushed over by another child or some other child snatching things etc etc so over time he will forget it. Also try asking other parents if their kids had that kind of issue anytime earlier............just to rule out the teacher or any adult helper in this case.

Over and above all this...how is his health? Sometimes, if kids are constipated they may get cranky too. Is he eating/drinking well? Is he getting enough sleep? Also how is the home front?
Have you and hubby or in-laws had any issues which you talked/argued in front of the child or was there a chance he over heard and that is bothering him now? You never know these small brains are capable of anything. My dd who is now 6 sometimes asks me questions about something that I spoke to her 3 months back. So, remember everything is getting registered in these brains which we ignore thinking they are small.

Also what kind of TV programs does he watch? You see sometimes we forget the fact that kids are with us and do not change channels. These masala movies or the useless serials nowadays also leave a mark in these small hearts. Something which is normal for us is just too much for these little ones. I always make sure the movie is worth the kids watching especially our Indian movies because for English movies we can go by the ratings. My kids 6 and 10 watch only rated G or PG not even
PG-13 which some people are okay with.

So, you need to dig into this deeper and find out.
Please do not ignore this since it is something which he is not able to tell fully but is bothering him.
