We are vegetarians. But my mom is insisting on starting to feed eggs for my 14 months old DD because she says it builds resistance, good for health etc., etc., Is she right? Should I start giving eggs to my DD?
I haven't touched eggs till now.
Has anyone veggie tried giving eggs for their little ones and if so, how (in what form) do you give?
Egg yolk is a good source of Iron, but is also one of the commonest allergen. Egg yolk is also considered to be a rich source of cholesterol, though some of the more recent studies do not believe it leads to a heart condition (in adults).
If you are doing well on Iron through foods, I would say don't bother about egg. It is possible to be completely vegetarian and be healthy. What builds resistance is healthy, well balanced food. It does not necessarily have to be of animal origin.
That said, we do give our child egg that is because we also eat egg though our families don't. DS used to have it scrambled, but now prefers it hardboiled with some Orange juice in the morning.

Eggs are a good source of balanced protein which is hard to find in a vegetarian diet. Indian diets are notoriously lower in protein so to me eating eggs is a good idea. Tikka has mentioned cholesterol but small children need cholesterol for brain development so for them this is not a problem. Tikka: I was told by a local farmer that cholesterol is not a problem in very fresh eggs but develops as they age and that they don't contain a level of cholesterol for concern until they are over a week old. I know you are a good fact checker so let me know if this is in error.
Egg is a very good source of vitamins, zinc, what not. I heard feeding kids eggs, improves their memory and it can make our hair, nails, bones everything healthy. If you cant tolerate the smell, just make omlette for your kid. Boiled egg is healthy than omlette.

Hi,
Just want to know - is there an at-home test that we can do to verify the "age" of an egg? Thanks!
I buy eggs from a local farmer so I know they are newly laid but I know of two tests. The first is the one that my college professor gave us and that is when you bread the egg look at how it spreaks out. The white should be humped up with little running out...if a lot is running out around the humped up area then it is old. A Sri Lankan friend of mine uses a different method (she is very knowlegeable about food) and she says to look at that spot inside the shell where the air pocket is. If it is larger than a dime it is old (this will get bigger as the egg ages). I personally don't know of any method to exactly know the age of the egg better than these.

Hii;
We are non-veg. But my LO is hardly eating even egg. The only time she ate egg was on our flight back from India, when we were given egg rolls. I tried duplicating it, but she isn't buying it :). Our parents do insist me to force her to feed... atleast eggs, but I am not forcing upon her. I beleive it is her choice to be a veg or NV and I don't want to impose it on her.
I do not beleive being a nv makes you more healthy, yes you will easily get the proteins and carb for your daily calories, by just one serving, but you have other choices too.

Me too very much worried whether vegetarian food gives all kind of nutrition?
Even though I was eating rich vegetarian food(not sure whether it was healthy food but remember drinking lot of milk and dairy products though did not eat much of vegetables in my childhood) when I was giving mother feeding to my DD she was losing her birth weight. My paed told me that my mother feeding is not rich enough that's why she's loosing weight and he asked me to support with bottle feeding..
Atleast now I am thinking of bringing my DD healthy and wonder whether it is okay to bring her as vegetarian?
Please share your knowledge of being vegetarian and healthy..
