Question 2 yr old - not identifying colors...is it normal?

Hi there,

I have a 2 year old daughter. She is quite active and naughty. My latest concern with her is that she does not identify the colours. Normally as a development milestone, they say a 2 year old would identify colors...! She is definitely able to distinguish that an object is colorful. But she probably cannot remember the name of the color or does not concentrate on this particular aspect...or I dont know what!
I have tried several ways of teaching her colors...followed many sites on the internet. I'm concerned whether she is able to see different colors or not, or its just her high-energy levels that is not allowing her to concentrate on learning those names of the colors.
Any ideas? Is it normal? Am I being unnecessarily worried? If you have a toddler or an elder one, please let me know when do kids learn to identify colors and what was your approach!

thanks in advance,
Hema

Hi Hema,
It is vey normal, I knwo many kids who start to talk only later than that.
My older daughter who is in Class 3, does take interest in teaching her younger sister.
But at that age most of the kids are restless and confused easily, so you are with the tide. She will learn eventually, give her time, be patinet.
Trust me it is not unusual.

Hi Hema,

It's quite natural that kids forget the colors or even whatever has been taught to them. At the same time doctors say whatever we teach them they learn easily and remember it for a long time. But they also add that we need to teach them and not ask back. Like for eg, if you want to teach them colors, show them the colors and teach them, but don't ask back like showing some color and asking them what color it is. get some books with colorful vegetables/fruits, etc and show her them and teach her. Also while giving food to her tell the color of the vegetable and feed her. You have to be enthusiastic while telling her veggie colors. like for eg say red carrot/green beans just for you dear, etc...get some colored plates and tell her this is just for her, etc....after a few days pretend as if u don't knw the color and tell wrong colors, for sure she'll correct u. this worked with me for my daughter when she was 2.

And don't be worried abt these, is shes able to just tell one or two colors, then for sure shes able to identify the colors. so theres nothing to be worried abt her. it just takes few months for them to remember and tell the colors. start with very basic colors red, green, orange, blue, white and black. then add other colors as she learns.

Cheers
Malar

Hello Hema, My boy will be 3 in a month. He started saying colours only 2-3 months back. Before that even when I asked him to show where is red he would show the wrong ones:( One important lesson I have learnt so far is not to repeatedly ask them and irritate the child and get irritated and frustrated ourselves. I kept on telling him very visual things like 'you are wearing a red socks today, the leaf is green' etc., Then suddenly he pointed to me one day 'that apple is green'. These days any thing he shows to us, be it a car or flower, he himself mentions the colour and now learning new colours like violet etc., Just tell her when you're in the super market or at home... whenever she's in that 'conversation' mood. They're absorbing every little detail like a sponge in their tiny head:) Latha
