Shiva Temples

Hello,

This time during my visit to India, I had the good fortune to visit a number of temples and the Brihadeeswar temple in Thanjavur (tamil nadu) was one of them. This is truly a geat temple built over a 1000 years ago by the chola kings. The size and the grandeur of this temple has to be seen to be believed. It is built of stone and has two carved gates. The main temple has a tall gopuram and is built so the shadow of the crown of the gopuram never falls on the ground. The lingam of Lord Shiva is awe inspiring. The walls and roof of the temple are filled with carvings and ancient paintings. It is a world heritage site, as designated by the UN and well worth visiting. There are numerous other temples in the Thanjavur area - two other chola temples in the area are at Darasuram and Gangaikondachola puram.
