Student from the Netherlands visiting Tamil Nadu

Hello everybody!,

I am a 28 year old student from the Netherlands.
This winter I am leave for India with another student from my study Social Work in the Netherlands.
We will work as a volunteer at the Nirmala Children's Village Project in South-India (Tamil Nadu) at Bodinayakanur. (www.rtu.org.uk)

We will only be there for two months and will love to teach the women in the village English lessons.

That is also what my question is about.
Is anyone familiar with schools, organisations, institutes etc. who provide English lesson material for Tamil women. I am looking for English books, sign cards, DVD etc.

Ik hope you can help me get these kind of materials for the women in the project.

Thank you for replaying my question.
I have just heard from a woman who's already been at the project that they have some books to teach English. This week we will be in contact with the people from te project so than we can ask what they need. Im thinking of sign cards. Cards with, for example, a picture of a girl and on the other site of the card te word 'girl' is written.

It would be nice if you allow me to contact you again if I have more exact information.

Welcome to il.

Nice to know that you are coming in for a project. I think you can get most of these materials from ngo operating out of gandhigram. infact, a visit to gandhigram could give you a better idea too..gandhigram is very near to bodinayakanur...

I think you can get the study materials the one you are referring to is like a flash cards, and actually it can be made by you with a picture of a local girl, and the letter girl stenciled on the other side. this way the picture of the local girl would be an incentive to draw children.

Iris, I agree with Shanvy. You will get the flashcards in Chennai if you are passing through the city. From the Europeans that I met in NGO-run schools in villages of Tamil Nadu, it will help if you pick up a smattering of Tamil. I met a couple of German students who were staying in Kancheepuram. While they had a lot of teaching resources, they found it difficult to reach out to the students. If you have anytime before you turn up at Bodinayaganur, it maybe good to brush up on Tamil! Hope you have a pleasant stay here.
