Hi Maduraites,
The chithirai thiruvizha just got over. We were lucky to have the good darshan of Annai Meenakshi and Lord Sundereswarar on their various vahanas ; dressed beautifully decorated with elaborate and colourful garlands and jewels - thanks to the courtesy of the numerous local TV channels. It is absolutely impossible for many people like me .to see all these in person; because of the crowd thronging the roads in lakhs, the scorching heat and traffic. The channels did a beautiful job of covering the festival in detail with close ups ; crane shots etc. We could enjoy watching everything so clearly. without the hassels of getting caught in the crowd and suffering in the heat - in the comforts of one's own home

. I was amazed to see that there were so many folk dances like kolattam, kummi, oyilattam, karagam, other dances being performed during the veedhi ula. The running commentery, the live queries and explanations regarding the festival given by expert tamil scholars were really something wonderful! It was told that Thirukalyanam was celebrated in the month of Masi and Alagar vizha in chithirai previously. It was King Thirumali Nayakar who combined both and celebrated the chithirai festival mainly to unite the saivaits and vaishnavaites!
People throng on the sidewalks for hours ignoring the heat and the pushing by the crowd, to get a fleeting glimpse of the Gods ; which shows the depth of ther love for the Gods. Year after year their love is on the increase and doesn't dwindle at all.Isn't it a great wonder; I am really proud of our people for still being very pious and traditional even in this Kaliyuga!
