Default Finest Post of the Month to be Categorized

Hi Malathy,

It has been on the back of my head for a long time and I always forget to mention in the Suggestion thread.

At present we have nominations of members for the FINEST POST of the month.

IL has grown in to leaps and bounds and there are new members who have proved their writing skills here and there are the old ones too who have been contributing religiously and entertaining viewers of Indusladies.com.

Skilled writers like Anandchitra, Mithila Kannan, Paulina, Jaishree9, Kamalji, SundarUsha and many others have already won the coveted prize and few like more renowned writers like Cheeniya, Varalotti are the stars of IL. It is natural to see their posts walking in to the nomination catergory. Some of them have aksed the viewers and administrators to keep them away from nominations and we salute and respect their decisions.

I feel we should have two category of nominations for the Finest Post threads. Budding writers should be in category one and renowned writers should be in category 2.

Viewers will nominate their contributions and in two different categories and the judges will decide who is the winner in each category.

Malspie,

Thanks for your valuable suggestions time and again. It has enriched IL and helped in encouraging participation of IL'ites.

Regarding this suggestion you have made, I have a basic question here...

On what basis do we categorize renowned writers and budding writers?

Because a budding writer in IL might be a renowned writer elsewhere (might have been writing for years together in some other blog / forum sites, would have got their writings published in magazines, newspapers, etc. for years now). They would have recently stepped into IL having come to know about this community and the readership here.

Like, for example, Ojaantrik - is a relatively recent member here compared to the members whom you have mentioned above. But he is NOT a budding writer. He is a renowned writer who has owned his blogs of writings, who had been writing to several blogs, but now wants to share all of his writings with IL readership.

Similarly, renowned or coveted prize winning writers here in IL might still be a budding writer as far as their overall experience in writing (outside of IL) is considered.

So it might not be easy to categorize budding writers and renowned writers. Also, we would hate to get into issues like hurting someone's feeling calling them a budding writer (while they may have years of experience writing inside/outside IL).

Moreover, once we categorize someone a budding writer, how do we define when they become a renowned writer? After they give a particular number of their contributions (or) after they get to win a certain number of nominations, contests or prizes? It may be too complicated to track all this info.

REQUEST TO MEMBERS WITH WRITING PASSION

Let me take this opportunity to "request" those members with writing passion, who regularly have been contributing their writings here, to consider taking a personal blogspace in IL and start contributing their writings there. Let the forum remain for those one-off writers wanting to share their piece of writing.

You have many folds of advantages in contributing your writings as blogs:

1. All your writings will be as collections in a single location - your personal blogspace.
2. The readership following your writings can easily find all of your writings at one place.
3. Your writings will not get mixed up or missed amongst the other writings.
4. There is also FINEST BLOG CONTEST (similar to FINEST POST) conducted for the blogs.

REQUEST TO ALL MEMBERS:

In fact, let me take this opportunity to clarify something about Finest Post Contest to all members.

Finest Post contest was NOT intended ONLY to encourage those members with writing skills.

The pure intent of the Finest Post Contest was to encourage those members making QUALITY POSTS.

By QUALITY POST what we mean is, it could be a good advise / suggestion to someone in need of help in real-life, a complete answer to a co-members question based on one's experience, a post that turns out to be giving great guidance, sharing information, making friendship, reaching out help, etc. It could also be a great piece of writing - fiction, non-fiction, poem, song, etc.

Fortunately we ended up getting & growing lots of skilled writers here, attracted by great readership and lovely feedback received here in this community. That eventually Finest Posts Contest turned out to be like a writers contest, which is NOT completely true.

So hereby, I request all members to read about Finest Post Contest and nominate QUALITY POSTS that they think are the best and have been useful and informative to them. It need NOT be a post exhibiting someone's writing skills alone.

Malathy

Malathy,

I have been thinking this for a while now and since Mals has come up with categorization , I was wondering is it possible to categorize posts based on genre.

I have seen that most of the posts nominated for the finest posts contest are from 'Snippets of life' forum. As you have already mentioned ,there are very good responses/feedback/suggestions in other forums but for some reason in IL parlance finest means more to do with writing skills.

There have been very few posts nominated outside of the fiction forum. Is it possible to categorise nominations based on the content.

eg: Best Humorous post, best thought provoking post, best response to a query.

We have already seen the overwhelming response in the finest posts section and due to the number of quality posts increasing everyday it only makes more sense to provide space for everyone who consider that genre to be their forte.I have seen Ansuya,DrPreethis, infinitehopes, suitablegirl and other posts in the marriage forum who provide expert advice and guidance.Shan's opinion on money matters is highly regarded and sought. Some of the responses are not confined to the original query and these ILites go a step ahead and post very good information and insight into handling matters. It is very difficult to select few posts and nominate when there are many who have contributed tremendously to IL.It would make sense to categorise and encourage all ILites to actively participate in all forums because their inputs are valued.

It is more like filmfare awards where you just cannot have a single award for best actor since there are several types of actors and you need to award the best in that genre.

I feel it is time to take a closer look at the whole process of 'Finest posts' and come up with something which is more rewarding to the deserving winners.

Dear Sabitha,

Just read your post. You really have given the FP forum a good thought!

Strange as it might sound, the administration was also wondering just recently about the way FP nominations are being dominated by posts from the 'Good to Read' forums. This was not at all the original intent of FP and if you go through the intro to FP when it started,Finest Posts of IL, it will be more than clear.

All the same, like you mention, IL has grown extensively since then and every forum is flourishing with its own threads, advices and interactive participants. I loved the way you have likened us to the Filmfare awards!! Point noted!

We at IL are open to good and constructive suggestions.
Please give us some time. We will give this a good thought and if any positive changes can be made, will be only too pleased to introduce them.

Thanks for your interest.

L, Kamla
