Sangunthala mam conducted the test.
I gave my best.
The next day she announced the result.
I got 91. I felt proud about myself.
My friends started congratulating me and asked for treat.
She called out Pooja’s name.
Pooja went near to mam. She was very nervous which reflected on her face clearly.
I thought she couldnt beat me and no where comparable to me.
“You got 97.. You are the new class rep.. congrats” mam wished her.

I couldnt believe my own ears.
I couldnt digest that I lost the pride of being the class rep for past two years by a new comer.
I couldnt tolerate that defeat.
My hatred towards Pooja grown high like the Eiffel Tower.
Everyone congratulated Pooja.
She smiled at me.
To me it meant like she telling ” See.. I defeated you… You could never beat me.. You were like a dust on my foot!!!”
I became depressed.
She came to my place at the end of the day.
I know she came near to me.
But I felt ashamed to face her. So I put my head down.

Pooja: “Karthick?”
Me: …………………..
Pooja: “I know you are not interested to talk to me!!!”
Me: ……………….
Pooja: “But still I would like to tell you one thing”
Me: ……………….
Pooja: “I am sorry”
(I raised my head and looked at her without seeing her eyes)
Me: “Why? For my loss???
Pooja: “No”
Me: “Then?”
Pooja: “For being the reason of it”
Me: ………………..
Pooja: “I didnt mean to do it. Sorry again”
Me: ???????????
She said that and left the class.

The next day Shangunthala mam took attendance
She called out Pooja’s name.
“Pooja Ramkumar”
No response.
“Pooja Ramkumar”
Again no response.

My friend Kumar whispered in my ears “She wont come” and grinned.
I asked “why?”
“Yesterday evening our seniors teased and warned her while she was returning back from school… Ha.. ha.. ha” Kumar laughed by telling that..
I just said “Hmmm”
“What da..??? Dont you feel happy??? She is your enemy machi(Way of addressing a close friend in Tamil)??” Kumar told me.
I felt somewhat.. I dont know how I felt exactly. But I felt sort of guilty… Felt like seeing her immediately.
I said “Sorry” in a soft tone.
“What?? Sorry ah?? why telling sorry to me da???” he puzzled.
How come he know I felt sorry for Pooja………………?????

I thought of asking sorry to Pooja in person.
She used to be the first person to enter the class.
So I came earlier than her and waited for her arrival.
But she didnt come.
Everyday I use to come earlier but she didnt turn out.
I thought she got into big trouble because of me.

I went to my senior’s class in break to ask them what had happened on that day?
I called my senior friend and asked him “Hey… what you guys did to Pooja???
she didnt come to school for the past five days???”
He said “What bothers you if she didnt come??Skip it and do your work buddy!!”
I hated the way he told that.

“I just asked you to warn her.. not to hurt her” I said by starring at him.
“Is it???? Then we are sorry.. we gave consecutive slaps on her face until she fainted” he told me in a kidding tone.
“Why the hell you did that idiot???” I exclaimed.
“You talking too much… She is not even your friend.. Don't create a scene and leave the class before you get dead” he said harshly.
My temper got raised.
“What the ………… you can do you ……………..” I scolded him with a hardcore bad word.

Almost everyone in the class turned their head towards us by hearing my language!!!
He must felt so embarrased I could say.
He jumped over me in anger from his place and gave a heavy punch on my nose!!!
Since he was much stronger than me I couldnt beat him!!!
He broke my nose.
His friends came and separated us.
I touched my nose.. It was full of blood.
My mind asked me “You had shed blood for a girl who is noway connected to your life!!!Have you done the right thing Karthick???”
I replied “I don't know!”

One week later
On a monday morning,I was sitting alone on the lawn and was writing my home work.
“Hi Karthick” I heard a familiar voice from my back.
I turned my head.
It was Pooja. . .
