Varsha returned home, after what felt like a long and patient wait. There was still a month to go for college to reopen, so she was left with a lot of time on her hands, not knowing what to do. Added to this was her wait for the email, for which she kept checking her mail on an hourly basis. In between, Priya called her to invite her to a trip. Varsha was in no mood to go, so she declined. Priya sensed her mood, and decided to surprise her with a visit. She and Harish dropped in to Varsha’s house one fine day, to find her moping around. “Hey, Varsh, what is this? Are you ok?” Priya asked. “Ya, I am fine,” Varsha replied. Neither Priya nor Harish was convinced. “Let us sit down and talk, ok? Shall we go to your room?” Harish suggested.

Soon the three of them were seated in Varsha’s room, with a packet of chips and a bottle of Coke. Priya chatted away about random things, with Harish adding his bit as well. After a point, neither of them could avoid the topic, so Harish came to the point. “Alright Varsha, what’s bothering you?” She looked at them and started talking. “I have got a marriage proposal. Someone approached my family with it. I said that I will consider it. I am having my own fears about it. Am I old enough to consider marriage? Although all have agreed to hold the marriage only after I am settled in my career, I cannot help feel little scared. What if they say ‘get married and then continue your studies’? What if I don’t get along with him? I am really scared.”

Varsha talked away, spilling all her fears and insecurities to her friends. She mentioned that she was waiting for his email. Priya and Harish listened silently to her rant, without interrupting. When she paused for breath, Priya pushed the Coke bottle towards her. Priya spoke up, “Varsh, we don’t know how to console you. See, at least one thing is there, if you don’t want to go ahead with it, at least your parents will agree to it. So that should be fine, right? And don’t decide about him right now, talk to him and find out how you feel, until then keep it open.” Harish added, “There is plenty of time for you to decide, Varsha, no big deal.”

This considerably cheered her up a little, and they started chatting about other things. Priya said, “Our results will be announced in a few days, let’s go to college to check it, shall we?” Varsha replied, “Oh my! Our results will be out so soon?” Harish teased her, “Why do you worry madam? First rank is in your bag, no point thinking otherwise, right?” Varsha said, “I don’t know! What I definitely know is that if I have done well, then a large part of the credit should go to you all. The time we spent studying together, and relaxing helped me immensely.” Harish said with a smile, “Well, that is the same for the rest of us too, so no need to thank anyone. We all thank each other.” Varsha smiled back and said, “How will we know when the results will come?” Priya replied, “I think they will call us.” Harish said, “I don’t think they will be able to call each individual student and announce the results, Priya. I stay close to college, I will go and see, if they have come, I will let you all know.” Varsha said, “Wish we could call one of the teachers and find out.” Harish asked her, “Do you have anyone’s number?” she replied, “No, does either of you have?” they shook their heads. Harish said, “Anyway, I will go and check in a few days. I can ask the office when it will come.”

So the next few days was spent in awaiting the exam results. The gang met on Monday, and were discussing a plan to go for a movie. Eventually, they decided to go for a movie the next day. All five of them went, and had a great time. Varsha enjoyed herself so much that she completely forgot her worries. On the Thursday of that week, Priya called Varsha and said, “Guess what, the results have come! Shall we go to college and check it? Or do you want Harish to tell us? He is there right now.” Varsha said, “Ya, we’ll go, but before that I need to know that I have passed!” Priya laughed and said, “Ok, he will call you. In the meantime, get ready; let us meet in college.” Varsha feverishly ran to her cupboard to pull out something. With trembling hands, she dragged out a pair of jeans and a T-shirt. She was just putting on the tee, when the phone rang again. She almost tore it in her hurry to get it down her head and reach the phone. She grabbed the phone and blurted, “Hello?” Harish’s voice said on the other end, “Chill, calm down, Varsha, you have passed. You have got a total of 87%. Come slowly, you can check your marks in each subject.” Varsha let out a sigh of relief, and said, “Thanks Harish, ok, I’ll be there soon. See you!” and she hung up the phone.

Now that she knew that she had passed, and had a good score, she was relieved. She sat down, and drank some cold water. Once she felt a little calmer, she went to her mother and said, “Amma, the results have come. I have passed with 87%.” Her mother was thrilled at this news. She said, “Congrats, maga, that is really good. I am proud of you.” and gave her a hug. Varsha said, “Thanks Amma, now I am going to college to check my marks in each subject.” Her mother replied, “Ok dear, be careful.” She set out, and reached college soon enough. The notice board was crowded with anxious students. Some were busy on their phones, conveying the news to their family. Some were seen jumping for joy, and there were others who were not happy with their performance. Some students were even found sobbing quietly.

She heard Raksha’s voice calling out to her, and turned to find her friends waiting nearby. Vineeth was not around. Maybe he was on his way, thought Varsha. As she approached them, Harish held out a slip of paper with a smile. “I took down everyone’s marks. When I reached, it was not so crowded; I guessed that by the time you all get here, it will be packed.” Varsha took the paper with a grateful smile. “Thanks Harish, how have you all done, and where is Vineeth?” Priya said, “He was sleeping when I called him, the Kumbhakarna! His father answered the phone, and promised me that he would kick him out of bed and send him here.” she grinned. Everyone laughed. “All of us have passed, Varsha, I got 78.” Said Raksha. “I got 77, and Harish got 73.” Priya added. “Wow, that’s nice, guys. I am happy we have done well.” Varsha said.
