    The Wondering Mind

Saumya stood at the window, looking at the blue sky. It was a nice beautiful sunny day. Suraj had already left for the office. As a dutiful wife she prepared breakfast for him, gave him tiffin, made tea for everyone and then came back with a cup of hot tea in her hand.

Standing by the window, enjoying the warm cup of tea in morning was the best part of the day for her. She enjoyed watching the kids rushing towards their school bus, mothers waving their hands and giving their kids the last minute advice. She always felt the excitement remembering the days when she used to be a student. That early morning rush, the energy level at the school assembly ground.

Since past few months it had become a ritual for Saumya to stand at the window with the cup of tea in her hand and look at the life outside her apartment. To wonder where she came from and where she is going. To ponder how long she will have to be quiet and subdued, how long will she just keep agreeing. The rebel inside her wanted to hit back on those who thought she was a doormat on which everyone had the right to walk on.

She met Suraj in her final year of post-graduation. Suraj was in the team of people who came to their college to do a workshop on work culture in multinational companies. During those 5 days of workshop Saumya and Suraj became close, exchanged phone numbers and before she knew she was head over heels in love with the guy.

They dated for few months and decided to get married after Saumya’s final year. After few months of marriage Saumya decided to apply for a job but as the market was hit by recession no one was ready to recruit a fresher. She was very happy with her husband, Suraj understood her well and he was all she could have asked for in her man.

Saumya stood at the window thinking about her life and how it has changed after marriage. Mr and Mrs Chauhan were good people, had she not been a family member she would have never complained about them. But as someone who stays with them in their house she became aware about their nature, which was constantly boasting about themselves, their family, their kids and a never ending comparisons between Saumya and the rest of the family.

No matter how hard she tried to be good, she was never up to their standards. According to Mr and Mrs Chauhan, she was always a little dull, lazy, not that bright, never dressed up to the occasion, cannot cook well, not good enough for a any job.

During first few months of the marriage she tried hard to improve but then she realized that no matter what she does she will never be appreciated. This not only brought lot of anger in her but somewhere deep down she started hating her in laws.

Saumya smiled at herself and the irony of life. How strange it is to love the man and hate his family. She wondered that maybe it’s not hate; maybe it’s just a strong dislike. Her parents had always teased her from being too kind. She could never utter a word to hurt a fellow human being. But now, she was thrown in a situation where most people around her want her to be what she is not.

She was getting tired of being told to be like her mother in law. She was instructed by Mrs Chauhan on how to dress. Before any lunch or dinner party, Mrs Chauhan would open Saumya’s wardrobe; lay out the dress she is supposed to wear with matching jewellery.

She no longer had the freedom to wear simple jeans and t-shirt, let alone the freedom, she was supposed to dress up like the way her mother in law wanted. Once or twice she decided to wear something different, which turned out to be a huge mistake as Mrs Chauhan kept commenting about how bad she looked, Mr Chauhan supported his wife where as Suraj kept quiet. After two such incidents Saumya decided that its best to wear what is told to her if she wanted to avoid constant degrading comments.

In few minutes as the sun will rise up the horizon her peace will break. She will get a call from Mrs Chauhan, where she will be instructed what to cook for breakfast, what for lunch, evening snacks and then for dinner. How to wash the vegetables, how to clean the kitchen and how to cook the food.

Not only will she have to quietly listen to the never ending lectures of Mrs Chauhan but she is also expected to prepare tea umpteenth number of times. Mr Chauhan calls for tea every 2 -3 hours, he will shout for Saumya who is supposed to prepare tea as per his wishes.

Standing at the window Saumya once again tried finding the answer to the troubling questions in her mind.

Why is it she is supposed to change and not Suraj?

Why is it that she is supposed to cook and clean now that she is a married woman whereas no one expects anything from her husband?

Why is it that Mr Chauhan refuses to even get up from his chair for a glass of water and she is expected to service his every call?

Why all the faults lie only in her?

Why did she do the masters when she is expected to behave like a smiling maid?

Why do they lie about men and women being equal? An educated man is never asked to serve his parents, never expected to cook and clean but the situation is complete different for a woman.

Was it a mistake to fall in love or was it a mistake to get married?.

Everyone tell her that she is lucky to get such a nice, rich, effluent family but is it luck to step inside a gold cage ?

Is she ready to accept the terms of life?

She was deep in her thoughts when she heard Mrs Chauhan calling her name. She sighed and looked at her empty tea cup. She has finished the tea yet again and yet again starts the same day and the same story.

    To be continued

    Excellent GW
I think the MIL should give a space to the DIL.
Becoz of such mocking situations there is always fight in the house. Ok in case she doesn't do something good it is the right of the MIL to make her understand but everytime pointing out the mistake is not good.
Will this Saumya fights for her rights?? let me see what is next in the story.

    Dear Aruna,

    Thanks for the appreciation.

Some people have an excellent idea how others should live their life BUT have no idea how they should lead their own. Space is a very powerful term, too much and it creates distance that can never be covered and too less it makes people suffocate. A balance is what needs to worked out.

I hope Saumya will handle the situation properly.

    regards

    GW

    hi gw,
Enjoyed the story and waiting to see what stand would saumya take next. Unnecessary taunts and leg pulls are real things which seeds the hate or dislike in mil, dil relationships. Even though i am not a good reviewer i felt to.
