How to avoid Oilstains on Wooden Shelves?????

Hello Ladies,
I have a wooden shelf directly above my stove . i have no clue how to avoid oil stains over it :spin moreover,since its a rented house, i do not want to install a chimney.... I guess over a period of time, the wood will welt off due to the heat from the stove. i cannot move the stove anywhere else in the kitchen...
Ladies... i need your help, pls suggest how i can save the wooden shelf from damage!!!!!
