Who will make it to the top this year?

Will it be Padma Shri award Winner M S Dhoni’s team – Chennai Super Kings (Runners up team of the 1st IPL played in India!)
Or the team which has three Captain’s - Kolkatta Knight Riders
Or will it be Kevin Pietersen’s team - Royal Challengers
Or is it going to be master batsman Sachin Tendulkar’s team Mumbai India
Or may be the real Dare Devil Virendra Sehwag beat others
Or the charmer and blaster of the blade Yuvraj of Kings XI Punjab celebrate the victory
Or will the man who held the team together Shane Warne of Rajasthan Royals whisk away the trophy once again!

Mumbai Indians take Chennai Super Kings at Newlands, Cape Town, Republic of South Africa on 18th April 2009

MS Dhoni Captain of Chennai Super Kings wins the toss but decides to bowl. Dhoni’s decision was appreciated when CSK packed the devastating batsman Sanath Jayasuriya 26 off 20 balls. Sanath Jayasuriya’s wicket must have been a big relief to the CSK as he was dropped by Sachin Tendulkar at the first slip in the previous over.

Though Sachin stayed through the innings, his blade did not cut much runs in the first few overs as expected. He made it up by scoring 59 with 7 fours and leading his team to 166 for 7. Duminy at 9 fell for Gony who fumbled but managed to take the catch at his second attempt and Bravo was packed back to the pavilion for 5, while Dhavan stole 22 runs to his credit. Abhishek Nayar was the first one to hit 3 sixes in an over of Flintoff and cut 35 off 14 balls. Harbhajan was run out at 4 and Zaheer managed 2 runs while Shah remained not out.

Mumbai Indians put a total of 165 for 7 on the score board in 20 overs.

Royal Challengers v/s Rajasthan Royals at Newlands, Cape Town, Republic of South Africa on 18th April 2009

All eyes were set on the champions of the first IPL, Rajasthan Royals and there was sympathy wave for Royal Challengers who were beaten to pulp.

Royal Challengers batted first. They lost two quick wickets of Ryder and Uthappa for 0 and 3 respectively. Taylor also walked out with a duck to his credit. Kevin the captain had to hold the end and he hit 32 off 30 balls with 4 fours. It was Rahul Dravid who stood up like a wall once again, the guy who had taken lot of thrash for the weak performance last year hit a massive 66 off 48 balls with 8 fours and 1 six. V Kohli was out on 3 and B Akhil on 9 with 1 four, P Kumar on 8 with 1 six, R Vinay not out at 8 and D Steyn not out at 0.

Had it not been for Rahul Dravid, RC would not have been able to put up a decent total to their credit.

Royal Challengers put up 133 for 8 in 20 overs

I Pathan 2-0-17-0

Champions of 1st IPL Rajasthan Royals tumbled with easy loss of wickets. G Smith hit 2 off 11 balls, S Asnodkar walked back with a duck, N Patel scored 4 off 16 balls, T Henderson hit 11 off 15 balls with a six, massive destructor of the ball Yusuf Pathan was sent back with a duck, R Jadeja scored 11 off 10 balls with 1 six, Captain Warne could do nothing much and was packed at 3 off 9 balls, M Rawat not out at 5, M Patel back to the pavilion with a duck, K Khan was back with 3.

It was Kumble spin which stole the show with 5 wickets to his credit he rolled down the shutters for RR. RC’s decision to bat first in the damp conditions worked in their favour.

Shane Warne’s 2 for 18 in his four overs did not do much for his team.

Rajasthan Royals put up a very poor score as they lost their wickets at regular intervals and lost the match . They were 58 all out the lowest total ever in IPL matches so far.

Kings XI Punjab v/s Dehli Dare Devils at Newlands, Cape Town, Republic of South Africa on 19th April 2009

Yuvi v/s Viru is a delight to watch for every cricket fan. The rains played truant as usual disappointing players and fans equally. First it was decided they will play 14 overs, with steady downpour, it was limited to 12 overs.

Delhi Dare Devils won the toss and elected to field. Ravi Bopara and Karen Goel gave a good start for Kings XI Punjab taking the total to 67 in 6 overs. Vettori stole the show with 3 wickets. Bopara was declared lbw when he was 22 off 16 balls with 2 sixes, Karen hit 38 off 21 balls with 3 fours and 3 sixes bringing in lots of cheers from the spectators. Yuvi was looking destructive with his 2 sixes but was run out at 16 off 11 balls, hitter Sangakkara was packed when he had scored just 8 off 11 balls with a boundary. With constant fall of wickets, initial partnership of the players was doing no favour to the team. Massive hitter Jayawardene made 6 off 6 balls with a boundary, the batsmen had limited overs at one hand and fall of wickets on the other which had totally affected their balance, I Pathan dragged himself to 6 off 7 balls, P Chawla was run out at duck, Kohli remained unbeaten without opening his account.

Kings XI put up a total of 104 in 12 overs with loss of 7 wickets.

Delhi Dare Devils opened with firing batting of Viru and Gambhir who got going at 14 runs per over. The rain showers visited again only to revise the target to 54 runs in 6 overs. The match was just a mere formality as the openers had already set a good run rate. They were asked to score a mere 30 runs off 25 balls. Gambhir scored 16 off 13 balls with 2 fours. Virendra (Viru) Sehwag scored 38 off 16 balls with 4 fours and 3 sixes.

The uncertainties of the game were digested with a bitter pill by Kings XI owner Preity Zinta.

Kolkata Kinght Riders v/s Deccan Chargers at Newlands, Cape Town, Republic of South Africa on 19th April 2009

Star packed KKR was ready to face DC. Star performer of the 1st IPL Brendon McCullum left KKR after the initial match and that had brought the graph of the batting to a low. Eyes were set on this delight to watch batsman who was skipper of the team too. With Prince of Kolkata in the team and other massive players there was hope of KKR giving a tough match to DC.

Master fielding positions of Adam Gilchrist and good use of bowling dampened the high spirits of KKR batsmen who fell like 9 pins one after the other. They started rotting right from the second over with their skipper going for 1 off 3 balls, Gayle for 10 off 12 balls with 1 four and 1 six, Sourav disappointed the selectors and his fans with 1 off 12 balls Hodge managed to break the ice to some extent and cracked 31 off 34 balls with a single boundary. The fours and sixes were not seen much as the wickets were falling like pack of cards. A Chopra scored 11 off 19 balls with 2 fours and was stumped by skipper Gilchrist, L Shukla cleverly stumped when he had scored 8 off 6 balls with a six, M Henriques 6 off 8 balls, Agarkar run out when he had just made 7 off 3 balls with a six, Karthik not out and scored 10 off 10 balls, I Sharma 9 off 9 balls with a six as the commentators started praising him for his six, he was bolwed, Dinda also exposed the stumps at 2.

KKR pulled themselves to 101 all out in 19.4 overs

Extras: 5

Fall of Wickets

1-1
2-12
3-16
4-34
5-48
6-72
7-73
8-81
9-99
10-101

ling:

F Edwards 4-1-6-0
R P Singh 3.4-0-22-4
Harmeet Singh 4-0-23-2
P Ojha 4-0-14-2
S Styris 4-0-32-2

It was R P Singh’s day, he terrorized KKR batsmen.

The team spirit of Deccan Chargers was high as they had knocked down key batsmen of KKR.

Gilchrist did not do much with his bat and scored a mere 13 off 11 balls with 2 fours, Gibbs steered 43 off 26 balls with 5 fours and a six, VVS Laxman was run out at 10 when he had started looking dangerous with a boundary and a six to his credit, R Sharma was unbeaten at 36 off 32 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes.

They answered the challenge of KKR with 104 for 2 wickets in 13.1 overs.

Extras: 2

Fall of Wickets

1-24
2-35

ling:

A Dinda 3-0-24-1
I Sharma 3-0-13-0
M Kartik 4-0-23-0
S Ganguly 1-0-8-0
A Agarkar 1-0-17-0
C Gayle 1-0-14-0
M Henriques 0.1-0-4-0

Full credit goes to Adam Gilchrist for his excellent captaincy. The fielders were positioned accurately for every ball bowled, the blade of the batsmen scored good runs and it was win all the way for Deccan Chargers who were written off last year.

Shah Rukh Khan has learnt a lesson after the previous year debacle show of his team. He was seen neither dancing nor crooning but keeping a low profile and his team helped him to maintain it through the match! Later, he was not seen at all, may be he had hurled back to the hotel room to watch it on the LCD monitor.

Man of the Match was R P Singh

3.4-0-22-4 best bowling figures by R P Singh
43 not out highest score put up by H Gibbs
18 fours and 7 sixes struck in the match
69 runs best partnership between H Gibbs and R Sharma off 49 balls.

Kolkata Knight Riders V/s Kings XI Punjab at Kingsmead, Durban, Republic of South Africa on 21 April 2009

With both the team losing their first match, they will certainly come with good strategies to win.

Knight Riders win the toss and elect to field.

Bopara and Goel’s magic did not last long. Goel was knocked out at 0, Bopara added 15 off 15 balls with 2 fours, I Pathan rolled the game to their favour going for boundaries and sixes. He show of 32 runs off 17 balls with power packed 5 fours and a six made things interesting for the spectators, there was an unfortunate run out of Kumar Sangakkara at 26 off 24 balls with 2 fours, Skipper Yuvraj used his blade to hit 2 sixes and 3 fours off 28 balls and added 38 runs to the score board, Kohli just made 1 run, Jayawardene remained unbeaten at 31 off 19 balls with 3 fours and a six. P Chawla was unbeaten and he added 3 runs to the score board.

There were 12 Extras and the total was 158 for 6 in 20 overs.

Fall of Wickets:

1-9
2-47
3-48
4-104
5-122
6-131

ling

I Sharma 4-0-24-1
A Dinda 4-0-34-1
M Henriques 4-0-32-1
Sourav Ganguly 4-0-24-2
L Shukla 2-0-22-0
Chris Gayle 1-0-14-0
