Royal Challengers V/s Deccan Chargers at Newlands, Cape Town, Republic of South Africa on 22nd April 2009

The two poor performers of the first IPL Season were facing each other today. Royal Challengers were placed at 7th Rank and Deccan Chargers at 8th in the first IPL Season! It will be Kevin Pietersen v/s Adam Gilchrist today.

Gilchrist was the hero of the day, he made his bat talk hitting 71 from 45 balls with 6 fours and 5 sixes. He rained the park with his shots. He hammered the ball at the strike rate of 157 leaving Royal Challengers clueless. Gibbs innings of 13 was packed with a single four and a six off 7 balls. VVS Laxman was bowled by Ryder at 5. It was Rohit Sharma who batted at No.4 who gave full support to Gilchrist. His 52 from 30 balls was laced with a singe boundary and five sixes. Styris contributed 14, while Venugopal was run out at 9, Ravi Teja remained unbeaten at 8.

Deccan Chargers with power packed performance of their skipper Gilchrist and batsman Sharma put up a total of 184 for 6 wickets in 20 overs with 9 Extras.

It was a week-day in Durban and the stands were empty. The opening was not great opening for Delhi Dare Devils with two quick wickets of openers Gambhir for 0 and Sehwag for 6 when the total was just 8. AB De Villiers drives Delhi to a massive total by notching up 105 runs off 54 balls with 5 fours and 6 sixes. ONE OF THE BEST MATCHES OF IPL T20-20 SEASON TWO!:b owdown

Rajasthan Royals v/s Kolkata Knight Riders at Newlands, Cape Town, Republic of South Africa on 23rd April 2009

McCullum won the toss and put Team Jaipur to bat. Team Jaipur set up a target of 150 for 6 in 20 overs with 10 extras. There was a poor show of batting line up. Opener Smith pulled out 15 with 1 four off 21 balls, P Valthaty scored 5 with 1 four off 7 balls, R Quiney hit a six off 2 balls and was sent back by a catch to Gayle off Sharma, Fire brand Yusuf Pathan played a good innings of 42 packed with 6 fours and 2 sixes off 21 balls, Hitter R Jadeja scored 22 off 26 balls before he got bowled out by Sharma, D Mascarenhas gave his wicket away at 27 from 28 balls with 2 fours, A Raut hit a 4 and 2 sixes off 13 balls and scored 21 runs. He was unbeaten along with Skipper S Warne for 2.

ling
I Sharma 4-0-36-2
A Singh 4-0-35-2
S Ganguly 3-0-23-0
C Gayle 4-0-20-0
A Mendis 4-0-19-2
A Agarkar 1-0-14-0

Shilpa Shetty and her sister Shameeta Shetty were seen in the stadium. Shilpa is co-owner of Rajasthan Royals.

With good batting line up for KKR the target was not impossible.

Skipper Brenden McCullum and Chris Gayle opened the strike with 3 and 41 respectively. Team Jaipur got their first break through with the wicket of McCullum who was bowled by Mascarenhas. Gayle laced his 41 with 2 fours and 4 sixes off 33 balls. Kamran got L Shukla caught by Rawat when he was 13, it was his first wicket and his very first over. Skipper Warnie was jubilant. Dangerous B Hodge was bowled by Munaf Patel by his first over of the innings for 5 runs. Dada of all, Sourav Ganguly was determined to take KKR to the path of victory and he was close to take the winning shot too. He led the KKR from the bottom to near victory with a score of 46 off 30 balls laced with 4 fours and 2 sixes. S Bangar fell at 2. Yashpal joined Sourav and everything was going smoothly for KKR. Yashpal reached 20 with 3 fours off 18 balls. Ganguly walked towards him and asked him to save his wicket and he will do the needful. Immediately Kamran took the price wicket of Ganguly and Yashpal fell to Warne. Suddenly everything was looking gloomy for KKR. Warnie and his team were happy with the sudden fall of wickets of two smashing players, Agarkar and I Sharma were there at the crease and 2 runs to win! I Sharma hit the ball, Warnie dived to save the second run and he managed to do so bringing the match to a nail biting TIE!

The world was watching with baited breath, what is to be done! What does the rule say!

Commentator broke the ice with the rule of SUPER OVER. Most of us do not know what it is all about. It was past 12 mid-night and the world was at the edge of their couch, some praying for Team Jaipur some for Team Kolkata. We could occasionally see SRK popping from nowhere. Well, he has learnt a lesson of keeping a low profile this time! The smile and cheese on the face of Shetty sisters was changed to some wrinkles!

KKR had two of their massive hitters Gayle and McCullum walking towards the crease and the youngest of them all Kamran Khan who is just 18 years old from Team Jaipur was the man to bowl!

What it is going to be! How many runs will Gayle manage to score, knowing that he loves to send the ball to the galore, there was frantic prayers sent to the Lord from Team Jaipur fans, Team Kolkata fans were relieved to see Gayle at the crease.

The first ball went for a single by Skipper McCullum, calculative in giving Gayle the strike, there was 2 wide and 3 fours taking the score to 16. Gayle was caught in the last ball of the over.

I did not like the fielding placements for the SUPER OVER by Warnie. He should have kept some fielders at the boundaries.

Team Jaipur sent their fire brand Yusuf Pathan with R Jadeja to take the charge of batting. KKR gave the responsibility of bowling to A Mendis (which was a wrong decision by them, may be they thought, Mendis took the wicket of Y Pathan and so he should manage to do so now too!).

This fire brand of Hyderabad set the field blazing with a power hit of six to the stands!
The next ball took a height and fell between two players, which made Y Pathan and R Jadeja score 2 runs. Y Pathan was still at the strikers end. Will this man who loves his bat do the wonders for Rajasthan Royals! The world is watching. He hit the 3rd ball of Mendis to another Six, I am confident that the fans of cricket world must be jubilant to watch this man play. Three balls and 2 runs to make! Yusuf steers the ball to the boundary for a four and Team Jaipur eliminates KKR from the win in the super over with super performance of Yusuf Pathan. What a massive striker of the ball is he! He looked cool like cucumber and stupendously steered his team to victory scoring 18 runs off 4 balls of Ajantha Mendis giving nightmares to the owner of Kolkata Knight Riders Shah Rukh Khan.

WHAT IS A SUPER OVER?

Each team gets one over to bat and the team which scores the most wins.

Each team will select two players to bat and one player to bowl.

If it’s a tie, then the team which scores the most sixes in that over wins.

If 3 batsmen are dismissed then the team is declared ALL OUT.

Kings XI Punjab v/s Royal Challengers at Kingsmead, Durban, Republic of South Africa on 24th April 2009

Yuvi’s boys smash their first victory of season two by 7 wickets.

Royal Challengers once again struggled with their batting line up and managed to put a total of 168 for 9 in 20 overs with 8 extras.

Poor show of Robin Uthappa continued and he was knocked out at zero, Ryder contributed 32 with 6 fours in 21 balls, Kallis’ valuable contribution of 62 off 48 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes brought in some relief to RC. Rahul Dravid who batted in the previous matches as if he has a point to prove stumbled and gave his wicket at 10, Skipper Pietersen was sent back to his dug out at zero, Taylor took charge and contributed 35 off 22 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes, Kohli succumbed at 2, P Kumar scored 13 packed with a six, P Singh was bowled at zero and Anil Kumble remained unbeaten at 5. Kallis proved to be dangerous for Kings XI who hit everything that pitched to him. It was Abdulla who tamed him at 62.

P Chawla 4-0-19-1
Yuvraj 3-0-28-0
R Bopara 1-0-4-0
VRV Singh 2-0-22-1

Abdulla was the maximum wicket taker for Kings XI and he sent the batsmen of RC marching back to their dug out.

Ravi Bopara made his Captain proud by playing a distinctive innings and he received good support from the Captain himself.

Karan Goel was run out at 19 with a single boundary and K Sangakkara at 26 with 2 boundaries and a six, Yuvi let Bopara play the strokes and it was time for him to show the world he has the best batsmen in his team. Yuvi’ knock of 30 off 17 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes were valuable.

In the last 6 overs they needed 66 to win the match. Bopara’s huge hit of 5 sixes changed the scenario for Kings XI. The win seemed to be in their favour by now.

Bopara was caught by Ryder of Kallis at a massive knock of 85 off 59 balls with 4 fours and 5 sixes when Kings XI wanted 11 off 12 balls.

With Yuvraj around nothing is impossible and proved he is the best hitter of the ball once again by hitting winning stroke for his side.

Kings XI scored 173 for 3 with 12 extras and won the match by 7 wickets.

K Pietersen 2-0-16-0
A Kumble 4-0-19-1

Kallis gave the maximum opportunity for Kings XI to go for the runs, Kumble was economical with 19 runs in 4 overs and wicket, Pietersen is proving to a be a poor skipper a out of form batsman and dull headed bowler. Then why was he paid $1.55m is the question on the lips of cricket fans!

Mumbai Indians V/s Deccan Chargers at Kingsmead, Durban, Republic of South Africa on 25th April 2009

Deccan Chargers were in the low rung in 1st IPL. In the 2nd IPL they are going unbeaten and are on the top list. Mumbai Indians have powerful stroke players like Jayasuriya, Dwayne Bravo, Duminy and our master batsman Sachin and good bowlers like Malinga and Harbhajan.

Skipper Gilchrist rained the boundaries and stand with 3 fours and 3 sixes. He scored 35 off 20 balls before he was caught by Shah off Bravo. Gibbs who is in form had an unfortunate run out at 58 off balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes. D Smith gave a good stand with 35 off 22 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes. R Sharma was out on 3, VVS Laxman should be out of the team, he is not able to field neither has his bat scored any runs, he was again sent back for 0, players like him should themselves offer to go out of the team! Venugopal and Ravi Teja scored 9 each, RP Singh was out on 4 and Edwards on 1, P Ojha was not out on 0. Though Gilchrist, Gibbs and Smith scored well, others succumbed to the good bowling of Mumbai Indians. Zaheer Khan proved to be very expensive while H Singh was economical though he did not get many wickets. Bravo and Malinga were the key bowlers of Mumbai Indians who helped in limiting the score of DC to 169. Malinga bowled a maiden over too! With 14 extras they put up a total of 169 at the loss of 9 wickets in 20 overs.

Skipper Tendulkar scored 36 off 27 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes. J Duminy hit 47 off 40 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes. Bravo hit 21 off 18 balls with 2 fours and was on his way to tear the opposition before he was plumb in front of Edwards. A Nayar scored 10 with 1 six to his credit. Harbhajan Singh was proving to be dangerous for the opposition hitting 1 four and 2 sixes off 8 balls. He was out on 20. Z Khan was not out at 4 and P Shah at 1. Royal Challengers v/s Delhi Dare Devils at St. George’sPark, Port Elizabeth, Republic of South Africa on 26th April 2009

Royal Challengers lost the wickets of J Kallis at duck and R Uthappa at 3. It was time for Kevin Pietersen to prove the money that Vijay Mallya has spent on him. He displayed some good show in 40 minutes he spent on crease, his knock of 37 from 27 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes was cheered by everyone as he was famous for walking out on a duck so far! R R Taylor scored 31 off 34 balls with 3 fours, V Kohli 22 off 24 balls with 1 four, M Boucher hits 36 off 28 balls packed with 2 fours and sixes, R Vinay Kumar was run out at duck, B Akhil remained unbeaten at 8, Pankaj Singh also remained unbeaten at 1. ler D Vettori who has been very successful was not able to curtail the runs this time.

Royal Challengers managed to put a decent total compared to their previous show in the previous matches. Their score of 149 for 7 in 20 overs with 11 extras was to be beaten by Viru and his team. Royal Challengers have so far been unable to lift the runs after the early dismissals of their key batsmen. They seem to fall like pack of cards as their middle order is stumbling all the way. With Rahul Dravid back home on a personal cause (his wife is expecting baby shower!), Royal Challengers are nearly on their way out!
