Default Where are the women cartoonist?

Early morning I found my husband smiling-I mean giving a mischievous smile. Last night he had kept one cartoon on our coffe table. For me to read in the morning.
(It showed a lady screaming. Suddenly two women look at her and says one "Must be a Feminist. The other says No! . Menopausal!)
My husband was thrilled to read and was anxiously waiting to see my reaction..
I did read that. And I asked 'do you know something about Andropause?. He replied immdeiately "Yes Ofcourse. It is something like say- - - ok something like women do - - - for eg scream, talk of woman's freedom,go to swamijis, visit temples-- say like Hanuman on Monday---- something something like that. When I asked "Hanuman on Monday? He said "see see something wrong with my harmones. Ok tell me when do you visit him. I said I don't know and I have perfectly ok. Then I have a doubt. Kanaka "why don't you women draw a cartoon on us too.I was furious and said" No one can draw cartoon on CARTOONS! He kept quiet ,meanwile I thougt to myself, 'Hardly any women catroonist.in the world.'

Believe me or not, that moment he just said it "kanaka I haven't heard of any women cartoonist.(gave a typical sacrcatic smileof his) and you know why? Because cartoons cannot be cartoonist!
That made my shut my mouth . I pretended as if Iam busy doing something. Infact today I haven't done anything concrete.

I think my thought and his statement cannot be just summarily dismised.
It's true. We lack the the art of laughing at our self or accepting jokes the way men take ot. Does anyone here know of any woman cartoonist.? kanaka

Dear Kanaka,

Lovely way to start a morning with the cartoons on the coffee table .I loved these lines. Completely support them ,[No one can draw cartoon on CARTOONS]

Hey but I do think there are quite a few women who do sometimes laugh at themselves and take criticism very positively. I have seen quite a lot of my friends who do possess this trait. Maybe few by they are definitely there.

Kanaka, there is Manjula Padmanabhan, known for her Suki cartoons. She is also a Novelist and short story writer.Obviously your DH doesn't bother to check before taking it for granted that the species woman cartoonist doesn't exist.

Dear Balajee,

I know Manjula Padmanabhan as a writr. What he means is one or two stray cases oesn't go to prove the point. Can any one cpme upto the level of O.V.Vijayan or Yesudas.
I don't mean to degrade women. Certain professions go well with certain category.
There are women writers. Can you compare them with Ayan Rand or Simonde Beauvoir?
Cartooning is harpooning. What auguments a cartoon is the punch line. It is here women in general fail. You need a kind of insensitivity to give and take. Women do lack this capability.

I also know that you are a Journalist. My husband is also a good Editor with journalistic skills. Putting these two together I have the courage to say men excel as cartoonist and there can be very few ladies who can reach that level of calibre. kanaka

I googled to find out about women cartoonists. This is one of the links: Metroactive Books | A Century of Women Cartoonists

These appeared to be mostly comic strip producers, but I am not really familiar with the book that the link takes you to. Perhaps not famous ones, but there must be competent women cartoonists in existence. Also, I know lots of women who possess great sense of humour.

But you raised a question worth pursuing.
