| This is not a story. Recently, I read a report that as the intelluctual level of people increase their faith in God reduces. This triggered this post. Scientists being high on the intelluctual level what God means to them I wanted to look. Indian scientists are split down the middle over their belief in the existence of God, the first nation-wide investigation into their deepest personal thoughts has revealed. One fourth of scientists took an atheist or agnostic position, another fourth were firm believers, according to the findings of a survey by the US-based Institute for the Study of Secularism in Society and Culture. Sir C.V.Raman did not speak much about God and religion. Science was his God and work, his religion. He believed that the new discoveries confirm the existence of God. Former president and a great scientist Abdul Kalam says in his auto-biography 'Wings of fire' " I wonder why some people tend to see science as something which takes man away from God. As I look at it, the path of science can always wind through the heart. For me, science has always been the path to spiritual enrichment and self-realisation". The great mathamatician Srinivasa Ramanujan said " An equation for me has no meaning unless it expresses a thought of God". It is said that the great Jagdish Chandra Bose who is the actual inventor of radio did not patent it as he beleived it is against the will of God and Marconi took the credit later. To me science and religion are two different paths to reach God while religion is based on heart, science is based on brain. Talking of brain scientific reasearch on producing artificial intelligence (AI) is going on now for the last few decades and what earlier scientitsts thought that they can produce a simulated human brain have now realised the difficulties. Surely, these scientits will wonder how God has created billions of human brains in the last 5000 years of human existence. So, I feel that as scientist explore nature to unravel the secrets their faith in God should grow. Lastly, I would like to share with you this joke about God and scientits. One day a group of scientists got together and decided that man had come a long way and no longer needed God. So they picked one scientist to go and tell Him that they were done with Him. The scientist walked up to God and said, “God, we’ve decided that we no longer need You. We’re to the point that we can clone people and do many miraculous things, so why don’t You just go on and get lost?” God listened very patiently and kindly. After the scientist was done talking, God said, “Very well, how about this? Let’s say we have a man-making contest.” To which the scientist replied, “Okay! Great.” But God added, “Now we’re going to do this just like I did back in the old days with Adam.” The scientist said, “Sure, no problem!” and bent down and grabbed himself a handful of dirt. God looked at him and said, “No, no, no. You go get your own dirt!” ![]() |

| Dear Geetha You have written a very good analysis.. Maybe its true that they think they are God as they create.. talk about ego.. I enjoyed Brindha's reply.. good one! |

It is not only scientists but also the so called Godmen also tend to think that they themselves are God. Thanks for posting your response. Love, Geetha Iyer |

It is true that some creative people tend to think that they are equal to God. I think Kamala Haasan is like that. True that he is a creative genius. But, in Dasavatharam he says in the end 'If there is God it will be nice' as if to question the existance of God. They forget that their creativity comes from their brain which is God's creation. | Geeta, Fantastic story. This argument continues and will continue forever in my house. I personally don't find any dichotomy between science and spirituality. I don't very well agree with the demarcation of religion and spirituality. My little brain says it is a very fine and minute thing. A bit of fine tuning to religion it becomes spirituality. So I prefer to see them in totality and not as separate entities. Secondly what science can't explain religion indicates. Religion at its abstract level can be as scientific as science itself. Science too carries with it fallacies and what is proved today is unproved tommorow. Exactness and perfections are only notions to make man reach his goal. There is nothing which can be can produce exact and perfect result. Both science and religion can make a man restless in knowing the absolute. If science made Einstein restless so also the cosmic phenomenon which makes him derive certain results. Few yeras back I read an article by Einstein where he mentions " Last night one super natural force helped me in deriving the formula E =mc2. Believe it or not. I mentioned this to my husband and he said "Raatri meeram thukka thille ennavo paddi chirrukai! Kanaka Last edited by kanaka; 17th July 2008 at 01:07 AM. |

| Dear Geeths, The base for everything iss HE alone and nothing else.......... this explains well in the joke. Good one Geetha, without Him how can we clone or rather think also. It is like without a foundation we are constructing a building....... |

| Excellent piece, especially the last bit. But I have a question for you that I have never been able to answer myself. You say religion is the way to God via one's heart and science is the way via the brain. Well, ultimately, religion is one way of thinking and science is another. I am sure we will all agree on this. Now, if you use the word 'think', where does the heart come in? Are we saying it is possible to think with our hearts? Even feelings that we trace to our hearts ultimately originate in our brains, don't they? I guess both religion and science are ultimately products of the brain. They are just two ways of thinking, aren't they? I don't know if I have been able to explain myself clearly. |
