Dear Ojaantrik,

Welcome to our IL forum!

You seem to have arrived with a bang!! Not only is your first post full of humanity and humane, you also seem to have landed straight away in the Finest Post of the Month forum with it. Way to go sir!

I am wary of street dogs myself. I really cannot blame your neighbour for worrying about his son. The animals are innocent, how are they to know? But why does the human intelligence lack civic sense is what baffles me.

Thanks to Kamalji for bringing you here.

Your name is very interesting, is it your real name or a name you use here? But I will refrain from calling you OJ! It reminds me of the unpleasant OJSimpson!!

L, Kamla

To Kamla:

A most thoughtful comment. I was myself surprised to have been nominated. In fact, Kamalji drew my attention to this, I being so new to the site.

No, it's not my name. My name is Dipankar Dasgupta and you can call me Dipankar if you wish.

Where did I find ojaantrik? Actually, it is somewhat mis-spelt. I should have made it 'ayaantrik'. Bengalis pronounce it 'ojaantrik'. It is the name of a story by a famous Bengali writer called Subodh Ghosh. You know what 'yantra' means, right? Machine. So, ayantrik is the antithesis of a machine. The story deals with a person who refused to call a machine a machine.

He was a taxi driver in a small town and he loved and talked to his car. The car was getting older and the driver found it hard to come to terms with it. He was in love with it, he believed it could never leave him. Then finally one day the car refused to move anymore and he had to accept the reality. It was sold off as junk metal.

There was a film version made by the Rittwik Ghatak. When the hand drawn cart arrives to carry the scrap away, the man sits and watches deeply depressed, tears in his eyes. And then suddenly he hears the honk of the car's old fashioned horn. He looks around in surprise. The car was gone, but not the horn! He found a little child playing with it. The scrap metal dealer had missed the horn and this child had picked it up. As he kept honking, the man slowly realized how the old must inevitably make way for the new. He ended up smiling.

All the best.

Yes, the sudden end was the most tragic part of it. A sorrow that was not anticipated hurts all the more, doesn't it?

Thanks for your comment.

Yes, I know they can sometimes produce allergies. But they give you all they have got and ask for nothing in return.

I must congratulate you for making your entry with a bang. 'The Dog and I' is a superlative piece of writing and very sensitive too. I too have a small stray dog following and I have found them to be more loyal than the hybrid ones. While the highly pampered domesticated ones have such mood swings which would put Cleopatra to shame, the street dogs that adopt themselves to us have no such aberrations.

The end of your tryst with the stray dog caused a lump in my throat and for no reason, I felt anger towards your neighbour.
Sri
You must be an animal lover. I will put up a post one of these days on an experience I had with a baby crow. The crow is not viewed with as much sympathy as a dog. But I think a person as sensitive as you will see the point.

Dear Dipankar,

Thank you for giving me such a detailed account of how you came to your ID name.

The story of the taxi driver and his love for his car was really very touching. Besides, I like this unusual sounding name 'Ojaantrik'. Hope I can take the liberty of using both the names while addressing you.

You give a woman a choice, she will be in a dilemma... she wants it all?!!

L, Kamla
