Default The world is indeed small.....

Friday morning hubby dear announced that two of his colleagues were here from India and that he would be taking them out for Dinner. Now, smart that he is ,he has learnt by now that from Friday night to Sunday night he is all mine so I was invited to go out with them…rest of the week he has NO timings but weekends are for me and the good natured person that I am I do not mind sharing him with anyone else .So I accepted his invitation.

They are both vegetarians, like you only and very fussy and rigid in their views , he continued…..…also the elder one is from your side, palakkad so u can have a good time talking with him. Reading between the lines it meant they were just not his kind of people and he needed me for a conversation at the dinner table. Anyway I had nothing better planned so made reservations at a good Indian restaurant and my DH picked me up in the evening.

Was introduced to the senior person one Mr Sundarrajan and his assistant Suresh. I asked Sundarrajan where he was based in India and he said Chennai, but that he had studied in palakkad, which is also my mothers hometown. His face seemed familiar so I just decided to ask him whether he was also known as rajan and he said yes. I somehow recognised him immediately as my mothers dear cousin brother who had spent his childhood living and studying with my mother and her siblings. She was very attached to this fellow, younger to her by 4- 5 years and who would willingly do everything she said. I had heard lots of stories about their childhood.

Well, my mother and I had not seen him for the last thirty years, last occasion being his sisters wedding which we all attended but back then I was a kid of less than ten years. Then a family fight between his father and my mother's family had severed all relations between both families and they had lost touch completely. My mother did try to make amends by inviting them for my wedding but none of them turned up. Needless to say my dh had never heard of such a relation.

OH BOY, did rajan and I TALK ? Suresh and my DH enjoyed their meal after their tiring day as we spoke non stop .Throughout the whole meal he was asking me with great interest about each and everyone from my mothers family and I was telling him happily about my cousins, uncles and aunts from the maternal side. He told me how badly he always wanted to come back and meet my mothers family but his father had said he would disown him if he ever tried something like that and being the passive person that he is had not taken any initiative .It was not like an uncle talking to his niece but an adult to adult conversation and I was feeling mighty pleased about the whole thing.

After reaching home I immediately called up my mom and told her the news. She was totally surprised and asked me all about his family. The next day I had invited them for lunch at my place and decided to be the BOSS'S wife and give him some sound advice. I wasn’t very sure he would listen to me if I spoke to him as his cousins daughter, thought he would dismiss me as a chit of a girl. So I told him it was high time that they renewed contact and that life is too short (his father had passed away and so has my grand mother, the brother and sister who fought) In fact just dialled the number and made him talk to my mom. She was so happy and I could see ,so was he.

Later in the evening couldn’t get over that well satisfied feeling and gloated over it to my darling husband. His comments….when I saw the fuss that he generally made while eating and his hesitancy in trying out anything new, ,I should have GUESSED….. he HAS to be related to you. Now, are u SURE Suresh is not another distant cousin of yours.? If u delve deeper into your ancestors I am SURE u will find a connection…..

Dear Mindi
So very well written.. I totally agree with you and ofcourse the world is small. Its always good to put aside differences but in many families rifts run deep as it might usually involve how wealth was distributes or some such.. You wrote interestingly that I just had to reach non stop!!! You rock girl!

Hi Mindi,

Good to know that you could be instrumental in renewing contacts with a relative.
Its sometimes sad, that a small rift, runs into generations and separates relative...even long after the people who fought or their children are no more........

You are right, the world is indeed small...

bye

Hi Mindi,

Really enjoyed your post........marvellous that you recogonised him after so many years ! It must have been a fulfilling moment when he spoke to your Mom on the phone ....how happy you made her feel too. Blood is definitely thicker than water !! Not easy to snap old family ties forever...you were instrumental in the renewal process and that must have been such a happy moment for you to treasure forever.

warm regards,
PAULINA
