| My Nickname in High School I was in all boys school until 10th grade, but starting 11th grade our school was co-ed. As you can imagine us teenage boys with raging hormones were very eager to make our acquaintance with girls. In the commerce class there were 25 girls and 12 boys so the ratio was 2 to 1 in our favor, apart from talking about them we knew nothing about girls. My cousin who was in college that time gave me a tip, he said the best way to get close to girls is by being a brother (mooh bola bhai) to one of the attractive girl in class. His explained “Girls see us boys as an enemy but once you become a brother you become one of them, you get inside scoop on what other girls like and dislike and their preferences, etc. You gain their trust and your sister would be more than happy to introduce you to her friends”. I was willing to do what it takes to mix with the girls. I was determined to try this brother thing out, much against my friend’s advice. I managed to rope in a sister, Anjana. She was very pretty and her family had recently moved in two houses away so it made sense to make this lovely neighborette my sister. Things were working out fine, my cousin did know what he was talking about as I became very popular with girls, the girls were friendly with other boys as well but with me it was very carefree. Anjana had pretty friends and her group consisted of 15 girls, the rest of them did not like Anjana and as a result did not like me either but I did not care. I was having too much fun: I was the center of their attention. Soon my name and fame spread throughout the town and I was able to walk in and out of girl’s houses without any restrictions from their parents. I accompanied them to movies and dinners. My friend Amish warned me but I ignored him thinking he was just being jealous. Out of the 14 available girls I fell for Avni, she was very sweet and I actually had a thing for her since the day I saw her. I planned to ask my sister Anjana for her help in putting a good word (not that I needed it) for me and possibly expressing my feelings to her. I still remember the day, it was in August, we had no school that day so slept in till late, I knew what day it was but we did not have anything planned until the evening so I just lazed around the house. Ours was a two-storied house with bedroom upstairs, I was in my bed when I heard some commotion downstairs, I was tempted to go down but figured it was nothing important. Suddenly our maid came upstairs smiling, she said “ Masi (she called my mom Masi) wants you to get ready quickly and go downstairs. She also wants you to bring your wallet” she kept on smiling. I had no idea what it was about but my teenage mind was working over time. I imagined Avni telling my mom “I have fallen in love with your son” and mom saying “I accept you, let my son come downstairs, I will give you Rs. 101 and perform an engagement ceremony”. I got ready and went downstairs and I was shocked to see about 15 girls from my class waiting for me – We had no school that day because it was Raksha Bandhan Day!!! Apparently all the girls that were friends with me considered me their brother, what hurt most was the fact that Avni was one of them. My mother dragged me in the kitchen “You did not even tell me that these girls are coming, since when did you become their brother? I have nothing ready, I gave all the money I had to Ganga (maid) to get some sweets, your father is at the shop, for tying rakhi, you will have to pay these girls from your pocket money” I took consolation in the fact that at least I did not make a fool of myself, had I professed my love for Avni earlier, I would have felt like an idiot, it all made sense now as to why their parents did not see me as a threat. The worst part about this was being made fun of by boys, they started calling me Saala (brother-in-law) and that nickname stayed with me throughout high school. Note : To make this blog more interesting I have stretched the truth a bit and added some stuff but something like this did happen to me, only (and Thank God) the number of my "sisters" were not that many BM |
