| It was Saturday and I was getting ready to prepare lunch. My dh had applied for leave and was happily enjoying his holiday watching news. If anything irritates me it is watching the same old news from one channel to another. They were debating the `Left’ and right versions of the nuclear deal. If the volume was raised a little higher you think the debate will take a turn one way or another? I had my own stress factors high. So I decided to cook something light. `you are not going over to Maya’s? he asked `no’ I said I’m sure he didn’t want the details, he switched from NDTV 24/7 to TIMES NOW. But I had to get it off my chest. I usually go over to Maya’s place on Saturdays (oh just a few weeks now) to learn some Bengali favorites from her. She prepares anything from singada to rasagollas from sondesh to sweet pohas. No running to K.C Das. She made them even better. She was my recent friend from the net circle. Vasanthi was another friend who was with us. She was great at making Andhra dishes. Her gongura chutneys and avakka mango pickles will want you to spread the leaf and squat again for another round soon after lunch. ``I don’t know about vasanthi she may go’’ I said.`` in any case she is one smart kid. She will back out any time and has a way of not wanting to be friendly at one time and over friendly another time that you forget she said something against you when she met last time. Maybe slightly selfish.’’ ``china here’’ he said ``uh?’’ I asked. he was switching channels again. I went on… in any case I’m quite good at idli vada and dosas the all time favorites of tamilnadu. I also plan to make innovations in idli and dosa. I have already tried out atleast 25 different varieties of dosas and plan to make more. Guess you know that’’ I said. As I went on there was no comment. If I were not to preoccupied I would have noticed that he paid little attention and for all you know I was talking to a wall. ``Maya is too smart. She wants all the recipes from my table. She has even Xeroxed a few of my innovations on dosa but when I said I would like to learn about the sweet poha and the tasty sondesh she makes she was all evasive. ``You see dear milk is not the same these days what with the aavin variety we get here in Chennai, not like the ones we get in kolkata’’ perhaps you can come with me to kolkata I will take you round the town. We can have plenty and I shall get you to visit the great K.C.Das kitchen. I was fuming when she said that because only the other day she was boasting to someone on the phone that she would be delighted to demonstrate any of her Bengali dishes for that function right here in Chennai.. ``so this Saturday and more Saturdays to come I’m not going over to Maya’s or Vasanthi’s. In case they ring up you can say I’m not interested in coming over. I said. I saw a wide grin on his face.. `what is so funny about our friendly break up? I asked. I thought he was gloating because usually I made jiffy meals and rushed to mayas or vasanthis but today I will stay home to cook? ``Aha dear I thought you were not interested in politics. So you didn’t sign the (nuclear) deal as well?’’ ``What has the nuclear deal got to do with sharing recipes?’’ I asked ``haha your maya is behaving like the bossy I still do not understand one bit. You think the nuclear deal is similar to our recipe deal? sathya |

| that was a very humorous piece sathya and very well narrated...yes it goes on in all our houses with the men switching either the news (perfectly agree with u ,after all news will be the same in all channels,no then why do they do that) channel or of course the sports channels...and we are busy narrating the days events...and they cant even LISTEN ....leave alone actively participate in the conversation... | Sathya Super Duper, It was a great hilarious peice. You have a very good sense of humour and know exactly the places to put in. And your narration was excellent. And all that talk of Singada to Sondesh and Rosogulla yummmmm . Well Im glad youre India, let Maya be America and Vasanthi be ChinaYou are our very own India and as a true patriot I love you for that!! You have portrayed an everyday household scene here,Im sure most will agree ,with that idiot box around they are oblivious to anything else .And yes a small disagreement can cause a stir , so I guess your hubby has a point there. Im sure we have all witnessed how it is easy to blow things out of proportion and make a mountain of a mole hill so there is quite a good chance that not sharing recipes can sometimes initiate a war , a small war though but yes definitely a war , maybe a verbal war! Loved the post Sathya.Keep amusing us more!! Love, Devika

glad you liked it no it did not happen it is all ``karpanai'' yesterday i asked dh why all this ruckus about nuclear deal either you sign it or just say no... why are Left so strict and BJP saying you have to make amendments to deal if it is to go through....from his answer i have written this piece... the channels switching and politics interest is not karpanai.... Good one...... hubbies think they are good at connecting our Chats in such devious but supposedly clever ways and they laugh , now i too have started appreciating the humour and Let them Go in peace! What do you say? [/quote]your words too true.... sathya |
