Default God & Goddess pictures

Dear IL'ites,

All of us will be buying grocery items frequently.

Most of the items have pictures of Gods and Goddesses on them.

For example, here in US, all the Laxmi brand items like rice, tamarind, dhals, atta etc have picture of Goddess Lakshmi on them.

Ganeshram appalams have picture of Lord Ganesha, Ambika Appalams do have Goddess Lakshmi on their wrapping.

Even in agarbathi wrapping/boxes/covers we find the Gods pictures.

When we open these bags/covers, we empty them into containers or boxes. So what do you do with these covers with the Gods pictures on them? Usually I get a weird feeling and hesitate to throw that immediately. To my surprise, this happens all the time. So, I wait for a few hours, finish all my work and then half heartedly dispose them.

Has this happened to any of you? Or is it just me?

I do agree that God is omnipresent and omnipotent. But, we do have a place to pray at home, where we keep the Gods/Goddesses pictures and also visit the temples. We believe at that time our mind is 100% focussed united with GOD.

So, what are your thoughts on this? Do you have any inhibitions and hesitations before throwing these bags and covers with pictures of Gods and Goddesses?

Cheers
Krithika

Yes Krittika,
I too sail in the same boat as you.Infact i preserve these wrappers and the go and drop them in a kalash near a pond here used for Ganapati Visarjan.
I know some may debate that these are mere superstitions but I just cannot bring myself to throw the wrappers in the garbage.

So count me in it dear, i am like you!

Love,
Devika

Hi Krithika
A good topic for discussion...........
I have not come across such pictures much, when we pray a particular photos everyday I don't think this has to be given so much of importance as we pray and believe that God is inside us so why give importance on such pictures. It is each once belief. I usually throw them off.

hi krithika and Devaki,
I am like you too, and if after a long mental debate I throw
them in the garbage. It will be my DH or DS who will spot it and bring it back. Now after piles and and piles of unkept (meaning dusty) God's images and old calenders I have just decided to give it away to my servant maid, (that clears my conscience) really not sure what she does with that and decided not to ask her that question.
regards,
uma

Hi krithi,

I normally collect all the bags and covers and keep it aside and dispose the same when we visit the beach.

Throwing the same in bins, makes me feel that i am committing a serious mistake and so opted for disposing this way.

Hi Devika,

Thanks for the first feedback ! Good to know there are people like me who have this feeling (of course..it is just a bag or cover), but still have this guilty feeling when throwing them.

What is a kalash, by the way? Won't the temple authorities object to it?

Cheers
Krithika

Hi Uma,

You are lucky..cause in India..we have the opportunity to give this to the maids. But here, we are respsonsible to dispose our trash in a proper manner.

It is nice to know you don't have the conflict of throwing these bags/covers or not.

Thanks for sharing your views here.

Cheers
Krithika

Hi Shashi,

Glad to know that you share the same sentiments as me. But, I was wondering how your mom disposes it near the lake..Is there any special place to dispose these stuff near the lake?

Do you mean is it thrown inside the water? Won't somebody object to it?
Thanks for your views...

Cheers
Krithika
