| Does God Exist? Raghu came to his room whistling loudly, the room boy watched with wonder in his eyes. Raghu was a quiet boy and the manager of the Mansion in Triplecane where Raghu stayed used to say that he would not mind letting out rooms to boys like Raghu at a lesser rent.Because these boys were very decent and well behaved. Raghu whistled, my dear, because he had received an increment of Rs.1200 from that month onwards. When his boss called him to his room and gave him the letter from the Headoffice, informing him of the good news and congratulations, Raghu was thrilled. His boss was also happy for him and said that Raghu deserved it. Raghu was in cloud nine.Raghu was the eldest son of a big family, three younger sisters and two younger brothers .His father was working for a Private company as an accounts clerk.Even though Raghu’s father was not even a graduate, still the company management continued to have him in their employment because Raghu’s father was diligent, hardworking, honest and never took leave. His salary was hardly Rs 4000/.In this salary he managed to give his eldest son a reasonably good education,Ragu was a B.COM graduate. As soon as he finished his education Raghu moved to Chennai and with great difficulty landed on a good job in an MNC, even though at a lower level.Raghu sent more than half of his salary to his parents in the town and what he kept for himself was sufficient for his roomrent, food, transportation to and from office .Raghu managed in this money,he had great grit. Raghu lokked at the increment letter from the headoffice for the hundredth time, sitting on the bed. There was a broad smile on his face.My God!1200 rupees every month. He was thrilled. He began to dream or plan what he would do with that money. He remembered.Yesterday,Sundaram, his colleague had come to office wearing a beautiful shirt in light rusk colour. He was looking nice. When Raghu complimented him on his new shirt,Sundaram said,”It is only 8oo rupees yar.Why don’t you buy one for yourself. You are wearing the same terrycot shirts everyday. This month, when you get your salary,go get yourself a nice shirt”said he and patted him on his back.At that time, Raghu simply smiled.Well, he could not afford to buy such a costly shirt,he thought to himself and forgot all about the shirt incident. Now the incident came before his eyes.He smiled. With this increment of Rs 1200 every month,he could afford to buy for himself nuce shirts,he badly needed a pair of shoes to wear to office. Now he goes to office wearing chappals. His boss had also told him once,”Raghu, you are working for an MNC. You should wear shoes not chappals” he said..Now,the first thing he would do on getting his salary , would be to buy a pair of nice shoes for himself. Raghu suddenly grinned to himself. He also had a dream. As a young boy he would stand on the rail track in his hometown and wave hands to the passengers and some of them would wave back.He had seen some men wearing nightsuits and and standing near the doors of the first class compartment. In the wind their nightsuits would billow out and Raghu would be fascinated always with the colourful nightsuits and their wearers. He would solemnly promise to himself,”When I grow big,get a job,in my first salary I will buy a night suit for myself and I would travel by train. My nightsuit will also billow out like this. How wonderful it would be!”The child’s dreams stopped with that.Remembering that Raghu smiled to himself and once agsin reiterated his promise to himself that with his first draw of increment, he would buy a night suit for himself and travel by train and stand near the door so that his nightsuit would billow out. “Sir,you have a phone call”.The room boy’s voice brought him back to the present.”Phone call, from where?”asked Raghu wearing his shirt to go to the main hall to take the phone. His mother was on the line”Raghu”said his mother in a sad voice. “What Amma, what happened? Is everything ok?How is Appa?” There was concern in Raghu’s voice. His mother never called himon phone unnecessarily. She was a practical woman and never would she waste her husband’s and her son’s hard earned money . “Raghu”Amma’s voice broke, she continued,”Raghu, your father has been asked to go home by his company”said mother.”You know father is touching 58,his boss called him and said to him,”Devan, you are a good worker, you have served us exceedingly well. But you are old and there are youngsters with college degree and computer knowledge who are willing to come for this post at a lesser pay. So,we have to ask you, to leave”This was the essence of what Amma told him.Raghu stood transfixed.Amma continued,”Raghu,I know how difficult it would be for you my son,but your father worked for private company, so he got a small amount of money as retirement benefit, when he came home,no pension also,I dont know, what I am going to do,how Iam going to run the family,Raghu.Iam ashamed to trouble you my son,but you have to send us some more money, every month till your next brother gets a job.Bye”said his mother and kept the phone down.Raghu stood there looking at the phone in his hand for a long time. Raghu sat desolatedly in his room and his friend Shiva entered. As usual he was chirpy and full of laughter and gaity.”Hello, friend, you try to pretend that you are busy,I won’t buy that. You have got increment, come on let us go to the temple ,and then you should give me a treat,ok?” Raghu did not answer his friend immediately. Then slowly when pressurized by his friend he told him about the news from his hometown that his father had retired from service at the instance of the management.”Why should this happen to me,Shiva?Do you know that I too have my dreams, nothing great I wanted to buy decent clothes for myself, a pair of shoes for myself. Now, look, my mother has said that unless I send more money to them everymonth, she would not be ale to run the family,so many mouths to be fed and so many expenses!” “Aha!”said Shiva,”That is the reason we have to go to the Raghu glared at him,”Do you find my position funny, here Iam telling you that I had my own plans for the extra money I was going to get and at this time my father had to lose his job.Do you still believe in God.Well I don’t ,as far as Iam concerned, there is no power as God.It is all our stupidity, those who do not have anything else to do may pray to God and do whatever they want,Iam not coming anywhere, let me live my poor life and die as poor”said Raghu in a very sad voice.Had you been thare ,my dear, you would have cried for him.But our good fellow Shiva was there,no?What did he do? “Raghu,God knew that your father was going to lose his job,God knew that your responsibility as the eldest son of the family was going to increase, that is why he has given you this timely increment.” Raghju looked at his friend with a slight air of understanding. “Yes,Raghu, imagine for a moment, your father has suddenly lost his job, there is a big family to support and you can’t send more money, what would have happened?Poor, your mother would have suffered a lot.God has helped you by giving you this increment, your dreams can wait my friend, you are young. There is still plenty of time to realize your simple dreams. Now is the time for you to offer thanks to God.Come on wear your shirt,we are going to the temple and we will have tea and bun for celebrating your increment.” Raghu, being a young man, hid the teardrops that threatened to fall down from his eyes.He hugged his friend,”I don’t know why God gave me increment Shiva, but I know why he has given me a friend in you.I need you and your guidance.”said Raghu and both of them walked to the temple whistling all the way.

| Mithila, A very good one...two things.are revealed here...1..there is always a reason to what is happening...with deep thinking we might get to know it, otherwise with a friend like Siva, we get to know why it has happened... 2. A friend should be like Siva...he is a friend in need...indeed! God does exist in Siva's form to help Raghu... sriniketan

| Mami, Neenga enn ippadi pannarel ? unga story ya padicha azhuga vardhu..... To be very frank I was reminded of my young age when we used to dream like this but after growing up also, going to job it was only family though mother used to get me all things but indulging in buying was not there. Sometimes I also feel let down like the hero but sanity prevailed and thanked HIM for everything. Touch wood mami, When compared to my childhood God has given me more than my share today and I am ever grateful and thankful. Thanks once more for reminding my childhood.
