Dear Kamla,
thanks for stepping in as always with your lovely feed back !
well, i guess it is a gift to be able to see the lighter side of things...
its one thing which does help me come out of any problem quickly....
i've seen people who are constantly worried about something or the other, i always wish they enjoy the small joys in life and lighten up....

Nevermind the number of superstitions that you have mentioned in your write up, it is how you mentioned them that takes the cake and all. Wow, a fine, very fine sense of humor. Great word play and fine tuning to this precious thing called humor.
With that sense of humor, life will be a cakewalk for you Sowpar.
Enjoyed reading it immensely and no wonder Venonimiss did not miss nominating it for FP.

L, Kamla

Your sentences, words, vocabilary, the way of wording and the humor - they all gave birth to this beautiful article about superstions. I loved it and that is the reason I felt it is worthy of being the FP of this month.

I could relate to most of the supers.. you mentioned here and by the way, you have covered almost ALL the common ones.
  • Black cat looks like the universal thing and I don't know what to make of those two black, one white and one grey cat that walk on my backyard fence almost everyday. Thank God it is just on the backyard fence and we won't go out that way ever!
  • Sneeze - yes, I did that today for first time in front of my two-year old! And you know what she said when I told her to close the door and sit with me on the stairs, she said "Mommy..wut r u dooooin..you silly mommy!"
  • I laugh all the time at our cinema 'Diya Bujhna Scene'..heights of stupidity of beliefs..Close the damn door and switch of the fan!
  • Raahu Kaalam (RK) is the one I cannot dispute or laugh at, becasue this has been and is being followed in my family for ages to the present. I do not do think of RK living here in US, but may be I should start following for good results.
  • Yes, students - paapam, some have beliefs and you cannot argue with them. When I was in college, I had 2 guy friends, who consider me the sister they never had. For them, I was the laxmi, the ultimate thing of Luck. What can I say, they made me filled their GRE and TOEFL application forms along with several applications for Univesities. I regretfully have to confess, that I got Visa and came first and they got theirs after being rejected many number of times. But thank god, they didn't decide not to see my unlucky face again. We are still the best of friends and I am still their lucky charm.
  • Evil Eye - we hear it very commonly, but I never did anything for it and so was my mom. It all began when I met some of my friends wives who are much much younger to me. But they would insist that I take the Nazar out for my beautiful and chubby daughter. Upon my husband's sentiments and my own unknown fears for my daughter, but still reluctantly, sometimes I was putting Kajal dot on her feet when she was a baby, take the last bit of food and spin it around her head saying everyone's Nazar should be vanished from her etc. Silly but who knows!!
  • Coming to numbers, it is a silly but world wide belief. My boss is a Chinese American and I cannot believe he uses combinations & additions to come up with the project delivery dates!!
The one silly thing I do almost everyday is NOT to pass salt directly to my DH's hand. That was his belief that two people passing salt directy to eachother will end up enimies or have fights and I wouldn't want that between me us even for a sec. So, when passing salt, my DH is a untouchable to me. I put in on the table and he grabs it a lil' later....

Dear Sowparnika,
I too shun superstitions, I do not have any lucky things. I just do things when needed. I am practical most of the time.
Your story shows the reality about such believes. All were habits of some long gone time which are not relevant in today's world.

Dear Sowpar,

A beautiful post by you!! Sowpar I see a fantastic writer in you dear. Now you have generated curiosity in me for your next post.

Superstitions or shuns ! They exist everywhere. Each giving emphasis to its authenticity according to their own beliefs.I would not say I shun them completely but yes not so gravely involved in them either.

Though Mommy dear would like me to believe atleast 90 of the 100, I still would respond to a mere 10 of them for her sake.

Sowpar all said and done I enjoyed this post dear. And you know humour is a lovely forte of yours .Even this post was as rocking as your shoe episode. By the way any luck there?

Love,
Chechi

hi varloo,
thanks for the fb!
its always best to be practical...
almost always, its the practical ones who go through life easily... :)
you are right, superstitions are invariably age old beliefs which have become irrelevant but are yet followed blindly by people who do not understand the significance...
