For the past few months my freezer had been my own. My freezer is part of my fridge. Usuallu no one in the family pays any attention to the freezer. So I had my own way of arranging everything. By everything let me clarify what I mean. Vegetables, frozen, cut, some cooked food some maavu and such constitutes everything. So happily during winter months I remained King and Lord of all I surveyed. Maybe I should say Queen.. mostly nothing would be disturbed and I would switch things around if I got angry with the maavu for reminding me its time to cook idlis.. Now that the heat is here to stay , everyone has started paying more attention than needed to my freezer and my precious inhabitants. Now they want to keep their icecream dabbas inside the freezer and they jostle for space with my previous inhabitants. With the frequent opening and closing of the freezer door my dh is spotting my veggies and maavu dabbas. Since dh needs one flavor and ds needs another, and both need to buy more than one at a time, there is not enough space to accomodate everyone now. By everyone i mean my veggies, my maavu and then their icecreams. Imagine the audacity of my family when they told me lets remove the veggies and maavu out of the freezer so the icecream dabbas will get more space in freezer. To say I was shocked is to say it mildly. I did out up a valiant fight to save my veggies and maavu containers but the poor things did not stand a chance even from the start. So now that summer is here in full swing there is permanent fight going on for freezer space.
Needless to say I am quite upset with family members. SO when I go to the living room to sit (after all the hard work in the kitchen!) a new fight starts all over again. Now they want the sofa that gets the maximum breeze, the one thats closer to a vent or one almost beneath the fan. The item of furniture closer to the fan is a recliner seat. Before I get time to come and sit t.v is already started and recliner seat is occupied. Everyone seems to take a fancy to certain seats in ALL the rooms based mainly on conditions like getting the most breeze, getting most t.v. coverage or just plain comfy. So being mother I lose out on the seats, furniture and now freezer too. Is it fair I ask you ? Am I not entitled to my own Prime RealEstate especially in my very own Kitchen?

We are the GrihaLakshmis. That means, no doubt we are the mistresses of our house but we have no rights to an exclusive space of our own. Just as how a Pooja room in most houses doubles up as a store room, so does our domain.

Before marriage, I had my fave stuff that I never shared even with my immediate family members. My dad's concerns were met by mom's calm answers : Let her be. Once she gets married, she will have no opportunity for all this.

I got married. Every second her words ring true.

When I moved to OZ, I had my own little corner in the cupboard for my cosmetics. One fine day, hubby aftershave , Moustache trimmer etc joined the space. My queries were met with a very solemn reply : What you are doing is inimical to the interests of our married life.

Me: How is that? Hubby: Well Feng Shui says that if a couple keep things separate, there will be a barrier between them.

Hubby however refused to explain the co-relation to my cosmetic space to our married life.

Dear AC, some senior married ladies here consoled me by saying, this is just the beginning, wait till you ahve a kid. Then you will not even have the toilet to yourself. The only way you can relax is by going out of the house & sitting in a park.

Your freezer suffers from over population problems.But I don't see tjhe point of stocking whole lot of icecream in the freezer. Demand that the maavu and veggies as underdogs must have reservation as they have job reservation and reserved seats in Indian educational institutions. .

Yes I agree with Balajee. Ice cream is high caste and maavu and vegetables are Scheduled Caste. They must get reservation !

so glad I started my day reading your most wonderful reply... I am now.
So incrredible your reply.. what to do..and how does the cosmetic thing work..? I for one took the larger cupboard for mine on day one and refused to budge.. and being the size I am its difficult to budge me as well. Dont understand how it works for even the CHAIR.. have to fight all the time:)

Balajee Thats a really good one.. Reservation ???????? never heard of it before.. will not fly here. They are nowbeing treated as backward..

Santosh your sense of humor is so infectious.. Never ever thought my poor veggies would be defended as Assets.... will try to win this losing battle.. However I could also use arguments to reserve a CHAIR especially the recliner. Now that everyone wants to watch the French Open all good seats get taken up by the time i come..

As usual a very good topic which made me as I too don't have a space of my own. Last 15 days back I made Mango Ice cream, the freezer was already full of frozen peas and corn, cutlets, Now the ice cream, no place hence everything was shifted to the fridge compartment and the ice cream had its pride place.

Don't ask of the TV I have forgotten what programmes are aired. Thanks to IPL from the kids to oldies everybody craves for a chair near to the TV and the sofa is left behind for me to occupy and see only heads in front of me. Few months back, as I was surfing the channels (which is a very rare thing) there was Sherlock Holmes coming in one channel, SH has been my all time favourite, hence though I will watch the same, lo my Fil came and promptly switched to some cricket match. I felt like

And cupboards......... least to be said about that, dh has a wardrobe exclusive for him but for myself...... namesake there is one but that contains all bags, extra bedsheeets/pillow covers, my jewellery and all important documents etc. Where is my space ?

Count me in too AC that is the problem going on for the freezer here too.
But not about the sofa as I usually love to put on the AC so cool breeze all over the room..........hehehehe

I fully agree with you.... It is absolutely not fair... You are entitled to your own Prime Real Estate, especially in you Kitchen... hahahahahaha...

But I really dont understand... Why you are feeling otherwise...

You are part of YDH... rather 50% of him... Son... Again your own... So, the Icecram, which they want is also your own requirements... so, whether it is mavuu/vegge or Icecream.... it is all your items.... and you are responsible for that...

Being the mother .... If you dont give a comfortable seat to your DS or YDH... who else will... That is why mothers are compared with Boomadevi... which gives all things to the people... So... You should feel happy in giving....
