Default The biggest surprise in my life

The biggest surprise was the day when I got married ie on 24th January 1973.
After marriage the bridge and bridegroom are taken to their respective houses to give
palum pazam. Before marriage I did not know where my in laws where staying.
When we were taken to my in laws house i was so surprised because they were staying in a Chawl. Being a working girl and staying in a flat it was very difficult to think to stay in a flat. My husband's salary was not enough to buy a flat that time. His mother and his brother were staying with him. The toilet was outside and I used to feel odd to take a bucket and go to the toilet which was 5 mins walk.

My mother in law expired in 1975. My husband's niece and nephew were also staying with us. My in laws were very good. My two children were born in that Chawl only.
My brother in law and niece and nephew only helped during the delivery. Then my nephew got a job in Ahmebad and he went away and my brother in law also stayed separately. In 1978 we got a flat through pagdi . Those days we used to get houses for pagdi. We paid 20000'- and got it. In early stages we had difficult times but after coming to the flat we became well off. Now we are leading a comfortable retired life.

Dear Iyerviji, that was an interesting recount of your experience.

Let me share my surprising moment after marriage.

When i entered my in-laws house after marriage i was shocked to see that they dont have a pressure cooker.I know many people dont use it,but in my house my mother has cooked using pressure cooker even before i was born and i had no clue about cooking rice,or pulses or vegetables directly.
I was shocked and i didnt know what to do.My only concern was even my husband wont be having cooker in his house (in US) and how on earth can i cook!!! I heaved a sigh of relief when my husband told me he has cooker. He even told me the type he has and asked me to get whatever i wanted. My mil even now cooks everything directly.

This is from me friends..

Viji,
Nice to see how you had adjusted to the new one...and how good are your in-laws...

To me, whatever happened after marriage is either a pleasant surprise or a shock...

Dear Roopa

Thanks for your immediate reply. Ya it was really a shock as I used to dream a lot before marriage. Those days it was very difficult to get a girl married. Since I did not have my father that time my brothers had to get me married. As I was nearing thirty and as someone recommended that my husband is a good person they got me married. And really my husband is a gem of a person.

Dear Sujimallige

Thanks for your reply. For a woman life is entirely different after marriage.
Theyhave to adjust so much. Even in my daughter's house they use cooker only for boiling vegetables. Rice is cooked directly. Now she has become used to their style of living.
