Default Can you give me 100 rupees?

April 29, 2008

On this day, 29 years back, my maternal grandparents (GP) had 2 reasons to celebrate.
First reason being, their first grand daughter was born, the day being Akshaya thrithya with the same star as Lord krishna's.
Second one being, they were shifting to their new little home, purchased for themselves with their hard earned money.

My dad had 2 reasons to celebrate..., one his first daughter was born, second, he had started his new business just a month back.

My mom had left to the hospital for delivery from their rented house.
The newborn was welcomed to the new home.

A year after this, my GP and my 2 aunts(unmarried then) wanted to celebate my first b'day in a very grand manner. But their house was too small & could not accomodate their wishes. My parents were also struggling hard to make ends meet.
At that time, my Grandmom's close friend was living in a posh bunglow nearby.
When my patti discussed her wish with her friend, the kind lady had gladly offered to celebrate my b'day in her house.
The whole place displayed a festive look; a cake was also cut....

During that time, my thatha was working as a clerk at TAFE. His salary was around Rs. 700. This was just enough to feed his family and he could also make a small savings for his daughters' marriage.

3 years later, on this day, I was 4 years old.
In the morning, my patti had given me head bath, made me wear a new dress, went to temple....
I took blessings from them & also from my Great Grand Mom.
My great grand mom always used to have NEW Re.1, Rs.2 notes with her.
She used to give them to us during festivals, anniversaries and any other special occasion, when we took her blessings.
That day, she had given me 2 Rs.
It was already mid noon..... Patti made some payasam. We all were about to have lunch. I was some how immersed in some deep thoughts.
My little brains could not take it anymore.
I went straight to my thatha and asked "Thatha , can you pls give me 100 rs? I want to buy a cake and cut it in the evening..." It was already month end, and he did not have the money to give me.... He was quiet outside, but felt very sad in his heart.
What my tiny brains did not know was, my parents were comming in the after noon with cakes & chocolates. I did cut the cake, ate chocolates and had fun.

And So, every year, I used to celebrate my b'day and used to visit my GPs without fail, to get their blessings.

When I was 24 years old, I was already married; I did celebrate my bday,
Everything did happen, also had new people (hubby and In-laws) arround...
But I could get blessings only from my patti, thatha had already passed away.

This morning, my husband gave me $100. I visited temple, lighted lamps,
My parents & ILS called up to bless....
Still, I don't feel anything special about the day......

Today,By god's grace, I'm earning, have enough savings, can buy as much as I want, I am also VERY MUCH CONTENTED with whatever I have. Yet, there is no one to give me the special NEW 1Re, 2Rs ...... My heart feels heavy because I have not got blessings from her. My dear patti is no more....Tears just roll down my eyes to think about her.

6 months back, on a monday morning, she was into her usual daily routine. As per her regular schedule, she visited temple. But, God had other plans for her….

Now, All I wish for is to be blessed from my ever-loving GPs.....

Dear Nakshatraa,

That was a lovely post. Yes we have a special bond with our GP's. I unfortunately never experienced the love of a Grandfather since both my grandpas expired much before my birth.
But I got enough love from both my Grandma's and my maternal granny was with us till she died 18 years back.Well now as I write to you I feel "That long back??" ,It feels like yesterday when she would read the Ramayan and the Bhagavad Gita to us. She would make us say our Sandhyanamam.
During Vishu we wear treated to the first coin of Re.1 from her. And it was priceless.
I can understand how you feel about your GP's and their Rupee.
No matter how rich we become in life , the money would be nothing compared to their amount. Infact they made the life rich.

Infact whenever I face any adversity in life ,I remember her wise words and that helps me pull through. She will always live with us through her lessons that she left behind in us to imbibe!

It was a very touchy post Nakshatraa and I can completely relate to you!!

Wish you a very Happy birthday, Lots of good luck ,peace and happiness!!

Love,
Devika

Dear Nakshatra,

Happy Birthday!!

It was a fine post and it made me think of my grandparents too. Your GPs blessings will always be with you and the very fact that you've written you are happy itself means that they are with u always.

Be cheerful and happy on you bday,
Poornima.
