| Haircut,Kulfis, Today I was feeling a lot of weight on my head.the head was heavy with hair.So once a month ritual of the haircut was due.Just down the lane is the Air conditioned barber, and with a ciggie in hand, walked down for a haircut. They work in teams. The junior apprentice got the tools together, put on the gown on me,sprayed my hair with cold water, and then comes the main Barber, sorry hairstylist, as they call themselves these days.I fell asleep, as usual, and when I woke up,I looked at the crew cut,and thought I was looking at an armyman.Good now I will go after a month and a half.I paid the 100 bucks, and a ten rupee tip,and he seemed surprised, maybe bcs others don’t tip at all, or mine was too less.He called the junior and told him this is for you. I left the old barber of 25 years recently. He used to charge 30 for a haircut,10 for a head massage, and I used to pay him 60/- .On my last visit to him afew months back, I asked him for a shave, which I don’t normally do.After that I gave him a 100 bucks note, and the guy pocketed it, saying aa Gaya saab. Now a shave must cost not more than 10 or 15 bucks, and this guy had the gall to charge his oldest customer 40 for it .I walked off never to visit him again.Of course I miss all the gossip he used to give me,but u cant gyp Kamalji of 25 bucks and get away with it. Anyway as I was coming from the haircut,There was a Kulfiwala right outside my house.I asked him what quality ones he had, he said he has 2,5,7,10 bucks Kulfis.Got a 10 buck one for myself, and it was so delicious in that hot sun, and as soon as entered home, tuffy came running, and I gave him half the piece, and he was licking it like there was no tomorrow.Must remember to buy him a kulfi each day, but a 2 buck one,bcs I am scared he may get diabeties. This reminded me of my old dog Naughty. He used to sleep in my bedroom with wife in the afternoon, and the kulfiwala used to come ringing his bell along the street, around 4 in the evening, and Naughty’s ears used to perk up, and would start barking for a Kulfi.wife had to take him out, buy one for herself, and the fellow used to give a 2 buck free for Naughty. He sure was a blackmailer for Kulfi. Some friends were sitting yesterday in my office, and the topic turned to farm land and cars.Seems a lot of farms are being sold these days, to make way for colleges, and other malls.Farmers are the only breed who have big pieces of lands these days at least in Rajasthan.Rich Mumbai people will talk of having X amount of Square feet flat, worth Y amount per sq feet.Small people like me in Jaipur will talk of sq yards, but these small people called farmers will casually talk of 5 or 10 bighas of land. Now one Bigha is roughly 3300 yards ( around 30,000 sq feet per bigha), so the small farmer too here has land measuring 1,50,000 sq feet.thats the small guy.Medium guys have 15 to 20 bighas of land. And we say farmers are poor ! ! ! Now as soon as the 4 or 5 brothers sell their land to some mall guy,the money most of it comes in Sacks, the black portion of it.And the first thing these guys want is a Black Scorpio car, which they don’t know how to drive, but want to own.So the showroom guys are more than happy to delvier the cars to the farms. Since most cars are power steering, these guys when going down a bridge, to save petrol, close the ignition, and the brakes refuse to work and the steering gets locked.and BOOM, u have a nice juicy accident, and they blame the manufacturers for their woes.So these days the first thing the showroom guys tell them is not to close the engines when they are on the road. And make them sign it too. So when ever I see a Black Scorpio on a Farm or on the road, I know this guy must have sold his farm recently. And all that money is soon lost in giving out money on interest at 10% per month to near and dear ones, on Drinks and Gambling.Very soon the guys are starving and on the roads. Snake Bite Insurance Claim – TOI Wed 23rd April 08 – A very interesting case really.A man had made a LIC policy for 50,000 and recently paid his first premium. They had a pet snake in the house, whom they fed milk and eggs everyday.cute little fellow this snake used toplay with everyone. This man, nice guy but was a little kinky. He used to love lure the snake into a cage and beat it heavily, just for the heck of it.He said it gave him relief from pressures of life. Well one day the snake bit him, and he died.the wife applied for insurance claim, but the LIC took it to court.Their argument was , if the snake had bitten the man unprovoked then the claim will be made. But if the snake bit the man in self defence then they will not pay the insurance. Well the widow won the fight, and got the money from LICMy question is why did they not make the snake testify in court and ask the cute fellow why he bit his master.Strange incidents happen all the time really. Well I am feeling lighter now on my head, and after writing this blog, knowing this will make yr head heavy,Bye and See you. KAMAL MAHTANI |

| Hello Kamalji, Funny blog! As they say, it costs more to get a new customer than to keep an old one...You did right, to teach a lesson to your old barber! No one should take you for granted! The incident about the snake reminds of my neighbour some years ago. He adopted a stray dog, and would take it out for walks regularly. However, he used to beat it mercilessly if it didn't obey orders...and so the whining of the dog was a constant accompaniment to those walks. The curious thing was that the dog appeared to be growing thinner and thinner as the days went by, and one fine day, the dog breathed its last. Then came the wry comments from onlookers, 'The dog committed suicide because it was not given good food!' Poor dog!Best Regards, Sowmya |
