Years back during college days have roamed Mylapore -- used to shop for books at Vijaya stores, CLS ; then a MUST visit to Kapali Koil ; a quick peek at RASI [ too expensive but great designs , so just seeing no shopping ] ; then off to bargain / buy lots and lots of glass bangles which were lined up along one whole street . Then the final stop at Shanthi Vihar for some 'stomach pooja' ------ how many ragda pattice, tikkis we used to gobble ; now even after one , have to watch the weight/waist ....

Are these places still there ?

Dear Mylaporeans,

I am not from Mylapore but reading about your love for the place I thought I'll chip in something that I think you will thoroughly enjoy reading, if you already haven't.

Chitvish had written a wonderful and nostalgic blog on Mylapore sometime ago. I was so enamored by Mylapore after reading her blog that I want to visit the place one day! For all you Mylapore lovers this is a must read -

Mylapore of Yore! - IndusLadies

Enjoy.

Hi Sowpar,

It is surprising how I missed your sweet thread about "namma mylapore".

You can also count me in...i am also a mylapore girl. Infact it was a sweet nostalgia reading your post about the Arubathimoovar thiruvizha, Kapaleeshwarar temple and Mada veedhi.. .

Oh..those days..so innocent and fresh in my memory. Walking thru the maada veedhi, reminds me of the fresh veggies...but also the remarks of the vendors...ayye..paathu edumma..kannu theriyala?? Also I recollect the fear with which I ran whenever I saw a dog or buffalo/cow too ! Used to walk soo fast to and fro from school..my friends used to tease me.

Vijaya stores and Ravi book house were my favorites during school days. Infact I went to P.S.Senior secondary School in Alamelumangapuram.

Since I was a Science student..i didnt go for CA classes...but many of my friends did. Also the Mylai typing institute..where I did my typewriting course.

Of course also reminds of the time I learnt dance from Uma Dandayudhapaani in ..was it Sannidhi street..?

The theppa kolam..ofcourse with full paasi..it was rare to see it with actual water. Used to frequent Ther thiruvizha with my parents..always so crowded and hey..speaking of pandals..my mom used to make lots of Sambar rice , Neer moru (buttermilk) and distribute it during the festival time.

Of course loved RASI..but heard the prices have rocketed there too.! All the small shops around the temple, GIRI trading to buy lots of shloka books,Audio CD's and pooja items.

Kapaleeswarar temple brings lots of emotions (both sweet and sad) cause it makes me think of various reasons and occassions I visited this place.

Also Mosque street Anjaneyar (even though it was part of Mandaveli) it was very close and I used to go there frequently too!

I love the SriVidya Kumkumam store, infact it belongs to my friend's dad. Her name is Shanthi , a very close friend. This shop has the most pure Sandal, Kumkum, Vibuthi , Kajal, hair oils..infact during my last trip to chennai, I got most of the stuff from here. Absolutely pure, fresh and reasonable prices too !

But wish, they would clean the streets near the temple instead of littering and making it tough to walk..need to close our nose everytime we go by !

Of course, Sai Baba Temple is another divine place in Mylapore. Full of positive vibration and total peace whenever we visit.

Thanks a lot Sowpar for taking me back and cherish those wonderful memories again !

Cheers
Krithika

my dearest krithika ,
lovely to see u here....sooooo happy to see that u r a mylaporean too....
no wonder u like leo coffee...all mylaporeans think that the south mada st leo coffee is the mother of all leo coffees...

am so excited to see that u r frm P.S...did my schooling in PS too...till tenth...

your post reminded me of the gud old days...dodging cows in mada veedhi... yells of vendors...mmm....of course, now that may is here, in another month vijaya stores would have a huge crowd jostling and pushing each other to get books and notebooks....

Rasi is more expensive, but they have some very different collections....esp in silk...love to chk out those occasionally....and heave a sigh if its beyond your reach...

so u learnt dancing too...wow, another feather to yur cap....

well, gud that u stumbled onto this thrd... so nice to see a mylaporean...

Dear sowpar,
Nice to hear your flashback memories in mylapore.I am also a chennaiite.Probably i don't know where i will be when i get married. We are really proud to be in a place holding famous temples which speak about chennai.
I think that you are very much interested in temples, south indian traditions after watching this thread and your reply in my thread.
Definitely you won't miss your mylai.Have a look at your albums, photographs taken there. You will feel better.

dear bhargavi,
thanks for the fb ...
yes, am sure all chennaivaasis hold our dear city, the cultural capital of india, close to our heart...
yes, i do have an interest in our heritage, culture and traditions....definitely our historic temples and other sites deserve much more care and attention than we give them now...hence i was prompted to make that post in your thread !

hmmm, yes,as the world becomes smaller, it has become easier to stay in touch...and be connected with the places and people we love...thankfully now, memories can be revived at the touch of a button... :)
