I am from South Africa so to understand from where I'm coming from in terms of the indian community check my post in Indians in Africa- Who's my relative? SA Indian. It seems that wearing a nose ring is a tradition practised for ages even if there's no religious authority to verify this. I remember both my great grannies wearing mukuthi and also many naanies used to wear naath. But slowly the tradition died off. It came back in fashion not by traditionalists but by the "piercing craze" that swept through a while back.

Almost 2 years back a mum and daughter Navi and Sonali Pillay challenged the courts when her daughter's school refused to allow her to wear a nose ring. The case was lost first but the mum took it further to the Constitutional court when this year she won, and the judge said that people should not be disriminated against because of their religious/ cultural background. Funny enough "learned hindu scholars" in South Africa could not give support to her case since they felt that it was of no religious significance. Even the Indian public in general weren't too vocal about it because it's not a tradition that we know too much about or practice. Then there was debate that if she chose to go to that school then she should abide by their rules.

Although I was disturbed by the intolerance of the school authorities I too wasn't too passionate of this matter until NOW. My daughter turned one and my mum said that for Mayuri's birthday the earings and piercing would be her present. Like many years ago when I was one, my granny took me to the jewellers and pierced my ears. Now if someone interferes with my daughters pierced ears I too would be upset though it traditional, cultural but not religious. In South Africa religious differences are to be respected but its a grey area about some cultural aspects.

Can people tell me if there is any religious significance or specific rituals that people do when piercing the nose or ears?

PS: I am married into a Govender family. While there is no such surname in India they are from the Gounder/ Gounda community - it would be interesting to know some of their traditions.

Regards Neesha
dear neesha,

HI Everyone

I dont have a nose ring and neither does anyone have in my entire family... my MIL has but i was never asked tog et my nose pierced... so what do i have to say here, well this is about an incident that happened on my Wedding day, it goes like this

for my wedding jewelley i got everything as usual, but i dint get a "nath" the one generally brides wear, the one which has a string and gets stuck in the hair... instead i got the tiny ones (with magnet).. matching with my wedding lehenga... i had thought that i would remove this nose sticker after the pheras are done, cos by then all the photography would have finished.....so it happened everything was fine till after my Pheras, at the vidayi time (i forgot to take off my sticker) so all the crying and sobbing started and with all that my nose magnet wich is inside the nose, was sucked in my nose and it went in and in.. thru my throat inside my body... and i was terrified and just started coughing and created a scene and everybody panicked...was like ohh what happened and all... but then i tried throwing up but nothing came out... then my mom said never mind it'll automatically come out of system... and then we all continued with the crying and hugging at Vidaayi...

Dear S and ladies,

I have to admit although a little shyly that when young my and my friends dress and mannerisms were heavily influenced by the movies and what the parents said or did had little impact.

With the movie Subhalekha the trend was to wear glasses even if one did not have the far/near sight to demand this. So happily bought a pair of clear glasses and wore them.

My best friend was an exact dupe of the lady in sankarabharanam (the dancer not the daughter) so she went out and had her nose pierced and so did the entire flock me included. Though had a rap at home from my dad (but with mom's encouragement always had the courage to stand up for myself).

Later when the craze was for double ear piercings, did that too with my daughter in tow.

Now at this stage in life have plenty of rocks in all sizes but not the enthusiasm\zest. This thread has brought back the memories.

Kamla, i was happy to note in this most recent visit to india that women are now keeping up their way of attire even after the tragic event in their life. Not many I admit but however small #'s it is a welcome change. Sticker bindi, colorful sarees and also flowers if they are used to wearing them and the nose stud too. With the heart desease, cancer and diabetes not descriminating the very young, it is heart wrenching to see a young woman if by society\family forced to show outward symbols of widowhood.

dear blondie,
nowadays it is a personal choice my mom and the rest of aunt all widows are still with their nose rings, they feel uncomfortable and we too find it difficult so we all request them to be with their fav jewels and be the same, at least things we can change we do the rest is beyond..sunkan

Thumbs down Re: Share your nose ring story here - Ettukkallu Besthri Potta...

hi sunkan .
i am wearing nose stud for last 10 years .when my marriage fixed my mom and my M-I-L INSISTS TO PIERCE NOSE TO WEAR DIAMOND NOSE STUD . but i am not agreed to them.my m-i-l also dont mind. after my marriage my husband posted in chennai . 3 months after my marriage my hubby requested to pierce my nose . after lot of persuation i agreed to pierce my right nostril on condition , its my choice to wear nose stud on occasionaly. i pierced my nose from one of old goldsmith in chennai. starts wearing small diamond stud. it looks good on my face. after 6 monts we viisted my m-i-l house in b'lore . by seeing nose stud on my nose my M-I-L surprised and feels most happily. next day my m-i-l got baseri for me , which is consists of 7 american diamonds . its almost ten times bigger to my actual nose stud. she inserted besari in my nose by great difficulty.its too much pain. but weared to make m-i-l happy & i thought after returning to chennai i wil remove it. my mom feels very happy by seeing besari in my nose . she suggested to wear continuously. its almost 3 weeks we stayed in b'lore. after returned to chennai i tries to remove besari , but i can't remove it . i asked one of my nieghbour to remove ,she said it looks good on my nose . but i removed it by help of goldsmith. due to besari my hole in nose is enlarged & i can't wear small nose stud . hole visible to everyone. by that i starts to wear 7 stone besari continuously. last my M-I-L suggets me to pierce left side also to wear nose studs on both sides. she wears both sides . but i requested her , that i wil pierce left side after 40 . wats ur opinion on both nostril piercing.

Hi Sunkan Ma'am.........
A very interesting topic.........but firstly my salute to all those pain bearers.........how could you all bear this extreme pain.............
My mom has one on left nose. In our place people used to have nose studs on left nose. And it looks really gr8 looking to stone/diamond studs which used to shine in light. I would love to wear that if this whole process will be painless....but no.........I know its horrible////////terrible......
But now a days this stud fashion has rose so high that gender no longer is a limitation. And talking about the part of body where to wear these..........we can't even imagine to see boys/girls wearing ornaments on.........parts.
I saw many girls are now wearing "tongue studs"......"eye-brow studs"......."upper lip and lower lip rings".........rings on naval ares.........studs on ear cartilages...........OMG...........
I would love to wear two earings but this piercing pain is helding my inspirations low.......
Great idea and so is the post...........
Regards.
