Yesterday around noon I got a call from my friend, that another friend’s mother just expired. I and Harsha we left immediately to the hospital, where she was admitted for the last few days. She had been suffering for close to 6 months, so it was just hospitals and home.
Soon we took the body home, and chairs were arranged in the lawns of the bunglow, and we all sat, while the ladies were with the body, harsha too with them. WE got talking, and the horror stories I heard about how some doctors and some hospitals fleece the relatives of the patient, sometimes the patient having died, and still medicines being got for them, was really horrible tolisten to.
Well I wont recount those tales here, but would like to remember the other tribe of doctors, who are so noble and first hand accounts of the good ones. My elder daughter Radhika, when she was 6 or so, fell down and cut her forearm, near our house, and the flesh was hanging, a big chunk, and she was bleeding badly.I panicked and called my friend, and we took her to a private Hospital, one of the top ones in those days.
We stood around for half an hour, and no one came to our rescue, they saying wait the doc is coming, and she was bleeding and crying. My friend suggested a general GP, close to his house, and we went to him.He had a lot of rush, but he accommodated us immediately, gave her a local anesthesia, stitched up her wound, and gave medicines from his clinic for 3 days. Total charges ? 25/- that is all.
I told my friend, this doctor of yours is mad, he will soon die of starvation, but well I was [proved wrong, he has a good practice, even today, and he is still as reasonable as he was then. Just one bad habit he has, he is allergic to smoking, and the smell that comes out of my mouth when I went to meet him, and he fired me for smoking a ciggie and coming in with my daughter.I felt very bad, for he said this in front of everyone, but I forgave him for my daughters sake.Geniuses can be eccentric at time, but what a Doc !
Another one , still around, and very busy, is a top Govt Doctor, and practices from home.Charges 100/- , never gets a test done, and gives u exactly 3 minutes before u are out.We go to him after we have tried other docs and there is no relief.
Harsha a few years back had a whooping cough for months, and could not sleep. As a last step we went to this fellow. He said it si caused due to allergy to something, dust, pollen, paint , etc.He prescribed Harsha medicines worth 5/- that is all.The name of the tablet was ,if I am not mistaken ATRAK 25 mg or something, and said tonight take one, and u will sleep half the night, and tomm I promise u there will be no cough and u will sleep the full Night. She got cured from just 5/- worth of tablets, and 100 bucks consultation.
So u have good doctors even today, who make money, but who don’t fleece u with tests and hospitalization where it is not required. I can lay down my life for them, and there must be some other good ones around everywhere I am sure.
Well , at my friends place , as we were discussing Docs, comes the pandit, and I am surprised to see him.We wished each other, and he was the same one who did my Daughter’s marriage.
A smart sauve pandit, he is one of the pandits I like, having seen so many rascals, he is like a breath of fresh air. He was suggested to my during the wedding by another friend, and I took a liking to him and his manners at the first meeting.
I told him ,Maharaj, tell me what will u charge for the wedding. He said pay me what u think is reasonable, but I pinned him down to a figure. He said 6500/- total. I took out a notebook wrote down the amount, made him sign it, and gave him a retainership of 1500/- advance and told him I will pay u the full balance after the marriage is over, and he agreed.
Well when he came later, I paid him in full as promised, and he said I forgot to tell u one thing , since yr daughter has got married, well u must donate a cow to the pandit, and I thought here is the catch , and I am screwed.Seeing my face he started to laugh, said even if u were to give me a cow, I don’t have the space in my tiny house to put her up, so a symbolic donation of 500 is enough ! I too had a good laugh, and got him a lot of work of marriage from my relatives and NRI cousins too.
And here I was thinking, this maharaj, does the weddings and the deaths, and how much he sees in life, just like a doctor, in whose hands patient get life, sometimes death, and what must be their thoughts on life ! I guess they don’t have emotions left, as they see these things day in and day out.
And the same maharaj, in the same day, performs the rituals for the dead, and then goes and performs rituals for a wedding too eh ! So come death , marriage or birth, the pandit will always be in business unlike me, whose life chart has been up and down a yo yo .
Not that I envy the pandit, but it sets u thinking sometimes, is it not good for me to become a pandit in the next life and have a steady income all thru.
But the way I have criticized pandits this life, I don’t think I stand a chance !!!!
KAMAL MAHTANI
KM ji,
Iam glad you have some good doc around. Getting a good doc is like getting a good wife/husband. Its all in nasib. I suppose you are lucky you got a good wife and good doc, makes life easy for you. Added to that is the pandit who is very accommodative.
On the whole you are blessed to have everything good in life.Enjoy the baki life you have don't worry abt anything, now that you have made will in IL .
Hi Kamalji
Nice blog...........
Now a days both make money doc as well as pandits.
Whether the patient is cured or not he wants his money, it is the same with the padit if they have done all the rituals correctly or not they are least bothered but they want they money, it is never a loss for both these people, it is always profits.
so during next birth we are all going to have pandit kamalji.......haha
