My grandmother was a very loving person. She dedicated her life
to our family. She was my mother's mother. My mother lost her
father so my grandmother used to stay with us only looking after
our family as she did not havea son. She used to treat her brother
in law's son as her own son and he was also very close to her

From the age of 6 yrs I have been very close to my grandmother.
She was a great lady with lot of will power. When we were
staying in Hyderabad she used to go and buy vegetables herself.
She will talk tothe vegetable vendor in tamil only and somehow
    they also used to understand.

Those days I am talking about year between 1950 and 1960
we had to spend 2 annas to go a short distance or at the
most 3 annas by Rickshaw. Those Rickshaws were driven my men.
Rickshawwalla used to ask 3 annas for a short distance but my
grandmother used to give only 2 annas. To everyone she used
to speak only in tamil, whether they know the language or not.

For my sister's marriage she only bought steel vessels that
too from the bhandi wali giving old clothes. Except for some
items all other steel vessels she bought from old clothes.

Since there was problem in my sister's marriage she prayed
to Lord Ganapathy that she will offer 1001 kozakattai (Modak).
My sister's marriage went well and it was very grand. 1000
people must have had lunch. After marriage every Friday
she used to make 101 kozakattai and offer to God.

She never used to allow us to do any work. She used to
get up at 5 or 5.30a.m. and by 7 everything will be ready. Till
she was alive she used to wash her own clothes.

When in Hyderabad she used to go to people houses to make
Murukku in which she was expert. She was expert in cooking.
Whatever we ask for next day she used to make. My second
brother was very fond of Sevai which was very difficult to make
as u have to press the nazhi hard to get the sevai. But still she
    used to make.

She was an example to everyone. But last days of her life
she suffered from cancer. She had gone to Delhi for my
sister's delivery. It was in the year 1971 my sister delivered
a son in March. Myself and my grandmother had gone to
Delhi to help my sister. I think my grandmother must have
been eighty years old I dont remember exactly. She used
to cook and I used to come home and take the khana for
my sister who was in hospital. One day I was late in coming
home to take the food for my sister and my grandmother
though she was new to the city still came alone to the
    hospital.

I came back to Bombay and my grandmother stayed back
to look after my sister's child since my sister was working.
When my nephew was nine months old my grandmother
got cancer and she did not want to trouble my sister.

She wanted to go back . My sister told her to wait
till my brother comes back and takes her to Bombay.
As long as she was healthy my grandmother did not mind
staying with my sister. Now since she was not well
she did not want to trouble my sister and brother inlaw.
She told mysister I want to go back to my grandson.
If I die I want to die in his house.

Those days treatment for cancer was not so much
advanced. She came alone to Bombay in that suffering
though my brother was togo to take her. She was
given treatment in Tata hospital. But she died after
    five months or so.

She used to tell me when she was not well for your
marriage u pray to Lord Ganapathi yourself as I wont
be there tomake kozakattai. My blessings will always
be with u. With her blessings I got married and my
husband was from her place Parur.

Now also if I think of my grandmother I feel I have
lost a great soul, though many years have passed .

    Dear Viji,

Nice one again... !! Very touching !!

The warmth and blessings are always very very sacred ..... Before, I read your write-up, I was talking with "Dearest" grand-mother (age - 88 years) from Trichy ... What a coincidence !!!! :)

    With regards...

    Dear Bhargavi

Ya my grandmother was a role model and very loving person with
strong will power. With her blessings my husband is from her
place North Parur. When she was there she used to tell us lot
about the people in Parur. But I did not know that my husband
will be from that place. When I got married my grandmother
was no more. If she had been she would have been very happy.

    with love and blessings

    viji
