| | Slowly open your eyes, slowly!
Dear Ilites,
Yesterday my mother's younger sister got operated for eye cataract. She has been advised by Doctor for extensive post operative care. Since she had no issues, she was totally dependent on our family for the surgery. I got the opportunity of serving her. She had been of good help to our family physically during my childhood.
Our room was right opposite to the Operation Theatre. This morning a surgery was going on and I was observing the happenings around the theatre. After the surgery got over and when the patient was brought out in a stretcher, I felt really lost in sympathy. The patient's well being was totally on Doctors hands and the whole humanity is surviving on this basic trust. I wonder at the beauty of these human feelings!
I was imagining the "operations" held in movies for a while and was sharing the moments with my mother.
You all might have seen the surgeries held for eye sight in movies. When the doctor removes the bandage from the eye and asks the patient - Slowly open your eyes, slowly - the patient open the eyes with a small flutter. The patient first sees a patch of light flashing on eyes and then a lens blur, at last he/she gets a clear vision. Then you might see the patient singing, dancing and enjoys the scenery outside with full joy. Is this all possible in a real surgery? Noway.
There is not even a single truth right from the surgery till the vision is obtained. We all feel very happy for the hero/heroine who gets the eyesight back. But in a movie which runs for 2.30 hrs, a surgery and the recovery can be shown only in that way. The audience who are not familiar with these kind of surgeries gets a wrong opinion about these surgeries.
It takes nearly 45 days for a patient to recover who is in initial stage of cataract. If it is a hyper mature cataract, it will take some more days depending upon our post operative care.
All these sensory organs are gifts by God to us. They have to respected and utilized only for good let it be our own organs or others.
What I am about to tell or share here is - without a complete or knowledge out of experience we must not caution or advise people who are suffering from all these ailments.
The title of this thread is not only for the eyes, it is for our minds, hearts and brains too.
Similar experiences may be shared here.

Dear Vanaja,
Let me open the account dear.
This was one great post on eye surgery. Not only that even our minds, heart and brains has to open out........... very true.
I completely agree with you in how they show in movies is actually diffrent in real life. Because I had the opportunity to nurse my FIL's mother when she got her cataract operated at the ripe age of 90 yrs.

Dear Vanaja,
This is was really an eye opener regarding the operation...
Yes, what is shown in movies is different...as you say..its within a short timespan and ofcourse dramatized....
Though ..I haven't personally come across close ones with this surgery...I understand that it actually takes days for teh vision to be normal..

Thank you for an immediate feedback. At the age of 90 years, great! But I feel as we grow old we gradually tend to loose fear of death. So we do not mind the repercussions. But the minus point is cooperation with the doctor. It becomes difficult for doctors to make old people understand what they instruct. If the doctor say "Look up" they look elsewhere.

Thanks a lot for the comment. But when I come across any specific "medical term" which I do not know, I immediately browse and would look for at least 10 websites to know about it.
My father's immediate blood brother died out of hypertension where he had a nerve burst in his brain. I went through his CT Scan reports and browsed the net using key words. Understood that there are less chances for him to survive and so happened.

Thank you for the feedback. So God had given you the experience. Yes, 45 days observation is a must for a cataract surgery.

Vanaja,
Hats off to you on bringing out the reality in a simple way..
I was not near my mom's cataract surgery but I was for my mil's..I don't remember when she opened her eyes slowly because, after coming home from surgery, she began to watch the TV..
Rightly pointed out by you that in order to finish off the story line in 21/2 hours, all things shown in the pictures are really quick...but people fall into those 'maya..isn't it...that is why after watching 'action' movies they think that if you hit the opponent like this..we/he can get up just like that in the movies....
When opening your mind slowly in this context, would prevent many disasters..
Nice thread...

sriniketan | Sriniketan,
It is dangerous for eyes to watch TV after surgery. As I have said already, we need to respect our own organs.
Correct, we watch stunts in movies. Even after severe injury the hero gets up with lot of emotions which is totally impossible.
Thank you for the comments.

Dear SV, That was a nice narration of what goes through on a Cataract Operation… I fully agree with you that we should not advice people without knowing fully or experience… either be it medicine or on health… I have a friend who’s wife and sisters are Nurse… He knows partly about the symptoms and other things… So, whenever he gets some body pain, his immediate reaction… he thinks of fatal things… Anxiety syndrome… what to do… So it is better to keep our mouth shut rather than suggesting or advicing… Veda
