I am a very patriotic person and regreat very much that I was born a girl and also the fact that I was born in the 60s' and not now. I very much wanted to contribute to our nation by joining the armed forces, or at least by sending my son there. But no such good luck for me! Even from younger days, I was fascinated by the forces and would read anything I would come across about it. I have read many stories and cartoons about the wars waged by India in the Tamil weekly Kalki in my younger days.
I have read a little about the great soldier. So I was deeply sorrowed when he passed away.
He had led the Indian forces against Pak. even when he was injured seriously during the liberation of Bangladesh. And he had a huge sense of humour. And I am aghast that he had never raised his voice in his life, he had been so cool in all situations. He was not only brave in fighting the enemy but in standing up to the political leaders when the need arose.
I hang my head in shame when no one from the top came over to ay their tributes and they had given some lame excuse for this lapse. If a cricker star or a glamour queen is to be visited then all will fall over each other to be there.
It is considered very prestigious to have been in the Army, in other countries. But here...?
One thing is, we ourselves have to select what we want to read or watch, rather than blaming the media. They are in a race now to win the TRP ratings. I always point out such news and also news with a human touch to my son and now he does not need a cue.

Hi shravanti,
I also had the same feeling. I felt atleast the major news channels and papers should carry some write up about the major, so the next generation will get to know about them.
Thanks shanthi for sending the link. It was indeed very good. In my school days Sam Maneckshaw was a real hero, during the war time and having DD alone had its own advantages as you got to know about leaders and others in detail as there used to be state mourning and no entertainment . As Varloo had pointed out now you have to choose what you want to watch .
I pay my tribute to the great commander through this thread.
Shanthi and Saraswathi, the link was good, thank you.
regards,
uma

Dear Varloo and uma,

I too agree that, now, we have to choose what we want to watch. But when it comes to throwing light on our great leaders...there is little or almost no telecast of it.

Thankfully we still have a choice in the print media and the internet....

Thanks and bye

Hi Shanti garu,
Thanks a lot for your first reply. Actually I am on a spree looking for a new job and visiting into IL is always a refresher. I was busy attending an interview and couldn't catch up with the thread. Since you are an all-rounder , its no surprise to me that you know well enough of Sam Bahadur. It would be a very good step from the Government if they decide to adorn him with "Bharat Ratna" award. Thanks for that wonderful link, it is such an inspiration for the younger crowd.

Hi Saraswathi,
I should thank you and Shantiji for taking the post forward. TV channels, particulary news channel bang our heads with these "Breaking News" and "Flash News".I have read a funny oneliner in one of those blogs, where a gentleman mentioned that his wife started talking everything in breaking news. 'Breaking news, No dinner today' & all. But i should also mention that they aid us in few times, and that comes from my self experience. I was watching a movie in one of the channels, when they played a breaking news about the hyderabad bomb explosions.I immediately moved to the news channels to follow up, otherwise unknowlingly i would have been enjoying the movie when so many people were facing a life and death situation.A great link, that you have shared.
